How to measure

Measure over the alb you will wear.

A - Back length: from the shoulder seam beside the neck, straight down the back to where the hem should fall. Mid-calf is usual.
B - Width across: arms held out level, from wrist to wrist.

Symbolism

The star is the star of Bethlehem, and the evergreen wreath round it is the old sign of life that does not fail.

Holly, with its thorny leaves and red berries, has long been read in Christian carols as a sign of the crown of thorns and the Passion foreshadowed at Christmas; the poinsettia is the flower of Christmas in Mexico, where it is called the Flor de Nochebuena.

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A quiet, ivory-on-ivory Christmas chasuble in smooth satin. The orphreys are embroidered in soft tones with blush poinsettias, sage-green holly and red berries, gathered round a gold-coloured star set inside a holly wreath.

The embroidery

On the back, a Y-shaped orphrey carries the wreath across the shoulders: holly leaves and poinsettias circling a small gold star, with flowering sprays reaching out to each shoulder. From the wreath a trailing vine of holly, berries and poinsettias runs the length of the column to the hem.

The front column opens with the same holly wreath and gold star at the collar and continues with poinsettias and holly to the hem. The colours are deliberately soft, so the vestment reads as festive without becoming loud. Each orphrey is edged in gold-coloured braid, and the outer hem is bound to match.

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class. This chasuble is made for the Christmas season, from Christmas Day through the octave, the Holy Family, Mary, Mother of God and the Epiphany. Its restrained design also suits Christmas carol services and lessons where a chasuble is worn.

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body and orphreys are smooth ivory satin, the embroidery is coloured and gold-coloured thread, and the chasuble is lined in ivory.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?
