Symbolism

'The star which they had seen in the east went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was' (Matthew 2:9).

The trail of light runs from the star to the stable, so the eye follows the same road as the Magi, from heaven to Bethlehem.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory gothic chasuble for Christmas and the Epiphany, with navy orphreys embroidered as a night sky. A great eight-pointed star shines over a sky of constellations and a silver trail of light, which falls to the skyline of Bethlehem and the stable at the hem. The chasuble is lined in navy.

01

The embroidery

On the back, the Y-shaped orphrey carries a large gold-coloured star at the centre of the yoke, its long rays spreading across the shoulders. Gold and silver stars and small constellations fill the navy ground, and a ribbon of silver light winds down the column to the dark outline of Bethlehem's domes and towers, with the lit stable at the foot.

The front column has a smaller star near the collar, the same winding trail of light and scattered constellations, and the Bethlehem skyline and stable at the hem. The orphreys are edged in gold-coloured braid, and the outer hem is finished with a silver-toned cord.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class. This chasuble is made for Christmas, especially Midnight Mass, and for the Epiphany, when the star leads the Magi to the Child. It suits the whole Christmas season and, being white-class, any other day that calls for white.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is ivory satin, the orphreys are navy satin worked with gold-coloured, silver-coloured and black thread, and the chasuble is lined in navy satin.

  • Ivory yellows and navy fades in strong light. Keep the vestment in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.

FAQs

Before you order

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
