Violet Vestments

Violet is the colour of preparation and penitence, worn through Advent and through Lent, and in many places for funerals and for the sacrament of Penance. This collection gathers our violet and purple chasubles, stoles, cassock robes and chalice veil, in satin and velvet, embroidered in gold-coloured, silver-coloured and other coloured thread.

Advent or Lent? The same violet serves both seasons in most traditions, though some parishes keep a bluer purple for Advent and a deeper, redder violet for Lent. On Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent, rose may be worn in place of violet. A plain or cross-embroidered violet stole is also the stole most often used for hearing confessions.
