Overview

What this piece is

An ivory damask gothic chasuble with a green orphrey of gold stars, golden rays, the crescent moon and red and pink roses, drawn from the tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

For 12 December and the Marian feasts. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

In December 1531 Our Lady asked St Juan Diego to gather roses on the hill of Tepeyac; when he opened his tilma before the bishop, her image appeared on it, clothed in a starry mantle, ringed by rays of the sun and standing on the moon.

The stars, rays, crescent moon and roses on this chasuble are taken from that account.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory damask gothic chasuble for Our Lady of Guadalupe, with a deep green orphrey that recalls her star-strewn mantle. The embroidery gathers the signs of the tilma of Tepeyac: gold stars, a burst of golden rays, the crescent moon, and the roses that bloomed in December for St Juan Diego.

01

The embroidery

On the back, the green column opens with a scattering of gold stars at the collar. Below them a tall oval of gold rays encloses a full bouquet of red and pink roses, with a gold crescent moon beneath it. From there a vine of roses and gold rosettes climbs down the column to a rose-pink band at the hem.

The front follows the same order on a smaller scale: stars at the collar, three roses inside a radiant sunburst, and a rose vine with gold rosettes running to the rose-pink band at the hem. The orphreys are edged in gold-coloured braid, and the outer hem and sleeves are bound with a woven gold trim.

02

Liturgical use

The green is the orphrey; the vestment is ivory, so it belongs to the white class. It is made first for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (12 December), Patroness of the Americas, and for the other Marian solemnities and feasts. Being white-class, it is also correct at Christmas, at Easter and on any day that calls for white. It is not a green vestment for Ordinary Time.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is ivory satin with a woven floral damask; the orphreys are green satin worked with gold-coloured and coloured thread, finished with a rose-pink band at the hem.

Care

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the orphreys carry dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so they must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang on a broad padded hanger and never fold across the embroidered orphrey.
  • Ivory yellows and deep green fades in strong light. Keep the vestment in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.

FAQs

Before you order

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
