Symbolism

'A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars' (Revelation 12:1): the sun, moon and stars are the classic signs of the Immaculate Conception.

The white lilies stand for Mary's purity, and the white rose at the hem is an old Marian flower.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory damask gothic chasuble with Marian blue orphreys embroidered in silver-coloured and white thread. The design is drawn from the Woman of Revelation 12: the sun, the crescent moon beneath her feet and the crown of twelve stars, joined by a climbing vine of white lilies. The chasuble is lined in pale blue.

01

The embroidery

On the back, a Y-shaped orphrey carries white lilies across the yoke and a line of small stars above a radiant silver sun. Below the sun hangs the crescent moon, and from there a slender vine of lilies, buds and stars climbs the column to a single white rose at the hem.

The front column opens with the crescent moon ringed by twelve stars, and a lily vine studded with stars runs the full length beneath it. Both orphreys are edged in silver-coloured braid, and the outer hem is bound with a silver cord.

02

Liturgical use

The blue is the orphrey; the vestment itself is ivory, so it belongs to the white class. It is made first for the Immaculate Conception (8 December) and for the Marian solemnities and feasts: the Assumption, the Nativity of Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes and the May and October devotions. Being white-class, it is also correct at Christmas, at Easter and on any day that calls for white.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is ivory satin with a woven damask pattern, the orphreys are Marian blue satin worked in silver-coloured and white thread, and the chasuble is lined in pale blue satin.

FAQs

Before you order

Is blue a liturgical colour?

Not in the ordinary Roman scheme, which knows white, red, green, violet, black and rose. Blue appears by the old Spanish privilege for the Immaculate Conception, and Sarum blue is widely used for Advent in Anglican and Lutheran churches.

That question does not arise here. The blue is the orphrey; the vestment itself is ivory, so it belongs to the white class and can be worn wherever white or gold is called for.

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
