Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory satin stole embroidered top to bottom with a cross over a globe, a chalice and bread, a grapevine over wheat, two clasped hands of different skin tones, and a pair of doves near the fringe.

A World Communion and unity-themed stole for ecumenical services, weddings and ordination.

Symbolism

A cross set over a globe opens the sequence, reading the Eucharist as something shared across the whole Church rather than one congregation.

The chalice, bread, grapevine and wheat that follow are the elements of Communion itself; the clasped hands, shown in two different skin tones, and the doves above the fringe carry the theme through to unity and peace.

Details

About this stole

The Ivory World Communion Stole reads as a sequence rather than a repeat: a cross set over a globe near the collar, a chalice with bread below it, a grapevine growing over wheat, two clasped hands of different skin tones, and a pair of doves just above the gold tassel fringe.

01

Design and symbolism

Worked in a full palette on smooth ivory satin, gold, blue, green, burgundy, tan and purple, the design opens with a cross over a blue-and-green globe, placing the Eucharist that follows in a worldwide rather than local frame. Below it sit the elements of Communion itself: a gold chalice beside a loaf of bread, then a grapevine with purple clusters growing over wheat stalks. Nearer the fringe, two clasped hands, deliberately shown in two different skin tones, stand for the unity the stole is named for, and a pair of doves close the design above the gold tassels. No single motif dominates the sequence; each one, from globe to doves, is given roughly equal space down the panel. The reverse is left plain ivory satin, with a gold-trimmed collar and no embroidery.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory sits with the white class and carries no fixed season of its own, which suits its purpose here: World Communion Sunday and other ecumenical or unity-themed services are not tied to a single point in the church year the way Advent or Lent are. It also serves for weddings and ordinations. It is not designed as a penitential stole and would not read as one in Lent or Advent, both of which call for violet.

03

Who it is for

Cut for a priest, pastor or minister, in the presbyteral style worn straight down both shoulders. Its explicit unity theme, including the two-tone clasped hands, suits a congregation that wants that message stated plainly rather than implied.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page suggests a length, which you can change. Your length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. The multicolour narrative embroidery, worked in blue, green, burgundy, tan and purple thread, is not suited to a home wash.

Store the stole rolled rather than folded, so the globe, chalice and clasped-hands motifs are not creased. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades coloured thread unevenly across a design this varied, and press from the reverse on a low setting, taking care around the tassel fringe.

FAQs

Before you order

Does this stole suit non-Catholic ecumenical services?

Yes. The design is built around a globe and cross, clasped hands and doves rather than any single denomination's emblem, and it is worked to read across Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist and other ecumenical settings, which is why it is described as a World Communion and unity stole rather than a parish-specific one.

What do the clasped hands on this stole represent?

The stole shows two clasped hands worked in two different skin tones, positioned near the hem alongside a pair of doves. Together they stand for unity and peace across difference, which is the theme the rest of the design, from the globe and cross down to the shared bread and wine, builds toward.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
