Overview
What this piece is
A burgundy satin stole with a gold dove and a jewelled gold cross, each trailing a narrow rainbow ribbon to gold fringe.
For affirming ministry, ordination and general preaching use.
Symbolism
The dove is the traditional sign of the Holy Spirit; the cross represents Christ's death and resurrection. The rainbow ribbon is used by many ministers as a modern sign of welcome and inclusion, distinct from its use as a liturgical colour.

Details
About this stole
Despite its name, this is not a rainbow-coloured stole: the ground is a deep burgundy satin, and the rainbow appears only as a narrow striped ribbon streaming down from a gold dove on one panel and a jewelled gold cross on the other. It can be tailored to your own length.
Design and symbolism
Each panel carries one motif near the neck: a gold dove in flight on the left, a small gold cross set with jewel-like embellishment on the right. Below each, a vertical ribbon striped in the six familiar rainbow colours runs down to gold fringe at the hem. The dove is the traditional sign of the Holy Spirit, most often associated with Pentecost and with baptism; the cross needs no gloss. The rainbow ribbon carries its own, more recent meaning: in the last few decades it has become a widely recognised sign of inclusion, used by ministers who wish to signal an affirming welcome to LGBTQ+ people from the pulpit. That is a meaning this stole wears openly rather than by implication, since it sits alongside, not instead of, the dove and the cross. The back is plain burgundy satin with gold piping and no embroidery.
Liturgical use
Burgundy is not one of the seven colours of the standard Roman classification; it functions in practice as a deeper alternative to red, and some parishes reserve a true burgundy for Passiontide or for general festive use rather than for a fixed liturgical day. This stole is not built around the church calendar in any case - its dove-and-cross-with-rainbow design is suited to occasional and thematic use: an affirming or Pride-season service, an ordination, or general preaching where a minister wants the rainbow visible without it dominating the piece.
Who it is for
Cut as a presbyteral stole for a pastor, priest or deacon, it suits a minister in an affirming congregation who wants the rainbow present but restrained, rather than printed across the whole fabric. It also works as an ordination gift for clergy entering an explicitly welcoming ministry.
Length and fit
Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, and any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page suggests a length from the height you enter, though you may override it; your chosen length, height and any notes carry through to your cart, checkout and order.
