An ivory-white chalice veil embroidered with a gold chalice beneath the IHS host, sheaves of wheat at the corners and vine and grapes worked into the border, finished with bullion fringe. It is offered in three square sizes.
The design
The centre carries a gold chalice with the Host above it, the Host marked IHS and set in rays: the two together are the plainest statement of the Eucharist a veil can carry. Wheat sheaves fill the corners and a border of vine, leaves and grapes runs round all four sides, the bread and the wine answering one another. The corner detail is worked with coloured leaf and fruit alongside the gold rather than gold alone, which is what gives this veil its softer, more festal character. Gold bullion fringe finishes every edge.
Cloth and finish
The ground is a warm ivory white rather than an optical white, which is the kinder choice under both daylight and candlelight and photographs far better at a wedding than a stark white would. The embroidery is raised against it, and the square hangs straight rather than curling at the corners.
Size
Three squares: 18 in, 20 in and 24 in on each side. A standard parish chalice is usually served well by the 20 in; the 18 in suits smaller and travel chalices, and the 24 in a taller chalice or a deeper drape. The size guide on this page carries the full table.
When it is worn
White is the colour of Christmas and Easter, of Corpus Christi, of most feasts of the Lord and of Our Lady, and of weddings, baptisms and funerals of the resurrection. It is worn on more days of the year than any colour except green, so a white veil is the second one most sacristies buy.
What you receive
The chalice veil only. The chalice and paten in the photographs are there to show the veil in use and are not included.
