Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

What this piece is

Symbolism

The flame recalls the tongues of fire at Pentecost in Acts 2; the dove is the standard sign of the Holy Spirit. The stained-glass style rainbow panel is a contemporary addition, read by many as a sign of inclusive welcome alongside the traditional Pentecost imagery.

Details

About this stole

This red stole layers three images down each panel in a fixed order: a small gold flame at the shoulder, a white dove below it, and then a geometric panel of angular colour blocks in rainbow hues, styled after stained glass, running down to the fringe. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

At the very top of each panel, near the collar, a small gold flame is worked front and back, echoing the "tongues of fire" that descended on the apostles at Pentecost in Acts 2. Below it, a dove in white thread represents the Holy Spirit in its more familiar form. The lower two-thirds of each panel is given over to an angular, faceted panel of rainbow colour blocks outlined in gold, built to resemble stained glass rather than a simple striped ribbon - it is the most geometrically worked rainbow treatment in our range, and the only one built from blocks rather than stripes. Gold fringe finishes both hems. The stained-glass rainbow sits below the flame and dove rather than replacing them, so the piece keeps its Pentecost symbolism intact even where the rainbow is also read as a sign of affirming welcome.

02

Liturgical use

Red is the colour of Pentecost across the traditions that keep it, and the flame-and-dove imagery here points directly at that feast. It also suits Confirmation, where the same Spirit is invoked, and it works well for an affirming or Pride-season service where a minister wants both the Pentecost narrative and a visible rainbow in the same piece. It is not an Ordinary Time red in the everyday, plain sense - the imagery is specific enough that it reads best on the days it was designed for.

03

Who it is for

Cut as a presbyteral stole for a pastor, priest or minister, it suits clergy preaching at Pentecost or Confirmation who also want the piece to carry an explicitly affirming visual note, and it makes a strong ordination gift for a minister entering that kind of ministry.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders, and made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or override it with your own figure; the length, height and any notes you provide carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

What do the flame and dove mean on this stole?

The flame recalls the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles at Pentecost, described in Acts 2. The dove is the more familiar sign of the Holy Spirit. Placed together at the top of each panel, they set out the Pentecost narrative before the rainbow panel below them introduces a second, more contemporary layer of meaning.

Is the stained glass rainbow panel a traditional design?

The stained-glass technique of angular colour blocks is a decorative style, not a fixed liturgical symbol, and the rainbow colouring itself is not part of traditional Pentecost iconography. It is used here as a contemporary addition that many ministers read as a sign of inclusive welcome, set below the more traditional flame and dove rather than replacing them.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
