Details
About this stole
This stole sets a single gold and cream dove, wings spread in flight, against a full rainbow gradient that runs from red-orange at the shoulder through yellow, green and blue to purple at the hem. It is designed for congregations that wish to make their welcome of LGBTQ+ people explicit in what is worn at the altar.
Design and symbolism
The cloth has a textured, pebbled surface, closer to a crinkle or leather-look finish than the smooth satins used elsewhere in our catalogue, and it carries a true colour gradient rather than a single dyed shade: red-orange at the top of the panel, moving through yellow, green and blue to purple near the hem. A large dove in flight, embroidered in cream and gold with wings fully spread, spans the middle of one panel. Above it sits a small embroidered banner shape left entirely blank, with no text stitched into it.
The dove is the long-standing sign of the Holy Spirit and of peace in Christian art. Set here against the full spectrum of the Pride flag rather than a single liturgical colour, it pairs that traditional meaning with the wider symbolism of the rainbow as a sign of inclusion.
Liturgical use
A rainbow gradient is not a recognised liturgical colour in any tradition's calendar, so this is an occasional and thematic stole rather than a seasonal one tied to a Sunday in the lectionary. It is chosen deliberately for its symbolism: Pride Month services, ordinations and installations where a minister wishes to signal welcome, and events held by a self-described welcoming or affirming congregation. Not every denomination or parish will consider it suitable for the chancel, so check with your own tradition and leadership before wearing it in a formal liturgical setting.
Who it is for
A priest, pastor or minister serving, or wishing to signal welcome to, LGBTQ+ people in their congregation is the intended wearer. It works equally as a personal piece for regular use in an affirming congregation or as a one-off worn at a Pride Month service or an installation.
Length and fit
Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over both shoulders, with any length from 84 in to 120 in available at the same price. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to a maximum of 160 in. Enter your height on the product page for a suggested length, which you may override; your final figure travels through to the cart, checkout and order.
