Our Story

The Clergy Couture is a young house working in an old trade. We make vestments and clergy apparel to measure, for priests, pastors, deacons, bishops and the parishes that clothe them, and we send them wherever a service is held.

We are not going to tell you we have been doing this since 1892. We have not. What we can tell you is exactly how the garments are made, who makes them, and what happens when one of them is wrong.

Why we started

Buying a vestment is a strangely difficult thing to do well. The traditional makers do beautiful work at prices a single-priest parish cannot reach. Below them sits a large middle market of catalogue garments cut to three sizes, photographed on a mannequin, and shipped without anyone asking which tradition you serve or whether the chasuble will actually sit on your shoulders.

There is a gap in between: garments cut to a real person's measurements, made from cloth that behaves properly under church lighting, at a price a working priest can justify. That gap is the whole reason this house exists.

Who we make for

Individual clergy, mostly — a priest replacing a chasuble, a deacon ordering a first stole, a minister who needs a shirt that fits across the shoulders. Beyond that: parishes and cathedrals building a seasonal set, seminaries clothing an intake, religious communities ordering habits, and families commissioning a garment for an ordination or a jubilee.

We work across traditions rather than for one — Roman Catholic, Anglican and Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Orthodox and Eastern Catholic use, and independent ministry. If your use differs from what we have written anywhere on this site, tell us and we will make it your way. The colour guide and the glossary set out the distinctions we work to.

Where to start

If you know what you want, the collections are the place to begin. If you are ordering vestments for the first time, or for someone else, read the sizing guide first, then write to us. We answer questions about tradition, colour and cut gladly and at length — it is the part of this work we enjoy most.
