Chasuble sizing

Worn over the alb, a chasuble is sized by length and width, not by chest. Choose the size for your height, or Made to Measure.

How to measure a chasuble: A is the back length from the shoulder at the neck to the hem, B is the width across from hem tip to hem tip

How to measure

Measure over the alb you will wear.

  • A - Back length: from the shoulder seam beside the neck, straight down the back to where the hem should fall. Mid-calf is usual.
  • B - Width across: arms held out level, from wrist to wrist.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory satin gothic chasuble with a burgundy velvet orphrey, supplied with the stole embroidered to match it.

Every motif is Eucharistic - monstrance, chalice, host, wheat and vine - which makes it a set for Corpus Christi, Benediction and Holy Thursday. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The monstrance on the back is the rayed vessel in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration; it stands above a chalice, so the back carries the Eucharist both consecrated and adored.

IHS on the front is the oldest Christian monogram for the name of Jesus, taken from the first letters of the name in Greek.

The wheat and the vine around it are the two elements of the Mass, bread and wine.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory satin gothic chasuble with a burgundy velvet orphrey, supplied with the burgundy stole embroidered to match it. Every motif on the set is Eucharistic — monstrance, chalice, host, wheat and vine — which makes it a set for Corpus Christi, for Benediction and adoration, and for Holy Thursday.

01

The embroidery

The front orphrey is burgundy velvet edged in gold. A chalice stands under a rayed host at the top, flanked by wheat ears and vine leaves with a cluster of purple grapes; below it a second host in a burst of rays carries the letters IHS; below that a gold gothic arch encloses a large fleur-de-lys, and foliate scroll runs to the hem.

The back is worked ivory on ivory. A monstrance, its lunette holding the host at the centre of a wide sunburst, stands above a chalice inside a gold-arched panel, and the orphrey beneath it carries further chalices and hosts within gold scroll, framed by columns of woven gold braid. Read from the nave it gives depth and light rather than a picture.

The stole is burgundy with a velvet orphrey, a chalice and host at one hem and a gold cross at the other.

02

Liturgical use

Made first for Corpus Christi, Benediction and Eucharistic adoration, Holy Thursday and First Communion. Because ivory belongs to the white class, the set is equally correct at Christmas and Easter, on feasts of Our Lord, and at weddings and Masses of thanksgiving.

It is not worn in Advent or Lent, which call for violet, at Pentecost or on Good Friday, which call for red, or in Ordinary Time, which calls for green.

03

What you receive

The chasuble and the matching stole, made together so the velvet, the galloon and the gold thread come from the same run. Alb, cincture and amice are not included. A burse and chalice veil can be worked to the same design on request.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page and the stole is made to the standard length to match, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large. Say in the notes if you would like the stole cut longer or shorter as well.

05

Ordering for a date

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 days, and delivery typically takes a further 10–15 days. If it is needed for Corpus Christi or a First Communion date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.

Care

Dry clean only, and clean the chasuble and stole together so the two pieces stay the same shade over the years.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger; store the stole flat or loosely rolled, never folded across the embroidery.
  • Ivory satin marks easily and yellows in strong light. Keep the set in a garment bag, away from direct sunlight, candle wax and incense residue.
  • Steam from the reverse. Never press the velvet pile or the embroidery directly.

FAQs

Before you order

What is included in the set?

Two pieces: the ivory chasuble and the burgundy stole embroidered to match it, shown side by side in the last photograph. Both are made together so the velvet, the galloon and the gold thread are drawn from the same run.

The alb, cincture and amice are not included. If you would like a burse and chalice veil worked to the same design, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote for them.

Which celebrations is this set made for?

The imagery is Eucharistic throughout, so the set is made first for Corpus Christi, for Benediction and periods of adoration, for Holy Thursday, and for First Communion Masses.

Because ivory belongs to the white class, it is equally correct at Christmas and Easter, on feasts of Our Lord, and at weddings and Masses of thanksgiving. It is not worn in Advent or Lent, at Pentecost, or in Ordinary Time.

What do the monstrance and the IHS monogram stand for?

The monstrance on the back is the rayed vessel in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration; here it stands above a chalice, so the back of the vestment carries the Eucharist both consecrated and adored.

IHS on the front is the oldest Christian monogram for the name of Jesus, taken from the first letters of the name in Greek. Around it the wheat and the vine give the two elements of the Mass, bread and wine.

Why is the back embroidered ivory on ivory?

It is a deliberate contrast with the front. The congregation sees the priest's back for most of the Mass, and a tone-on-tone orphrey with gold outlines reads as depth and light rather than as a picture, which suits a vestment worn for adoration.

If you would prefer the back worked in the same burgundy and gold as the front, choose Made to Measure and say so in the order notes.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen on height suits most wearers, since the chasuble is wide and unfastened. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in; the stole is made to the standard length to match.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges or want a particular hem length. Say in the notes if you would also like the stole cut longer or shorter. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should the set be cleaned and stored?

Dry clean only, and clean the chasuble and stole together so the two pieces stay the same shade over the years.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and store the stole flat or loosely rolled, not folded across the embroidery.
  • Ivory satin marks easily and yellows in strong light, so keep the set in a garment bag away from direct sunlight.
  • Steam from the reverse; never press the velvet pile or the embroidery directly.
