How to measure a chasuble: A is the back length from the shoulder at the neck to the hem, B is the width across from hem tip to hem tip

How to measure

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A rose gothic chasuble for the two Sundays of the year that call for it, Gaudete and Laetare, with a gold and rose budded cross above the word PAX and three quatrefoil medallions running down the orphrey. The tone is a muted, warm rose rather than a bright pink, which is what the colour is meant to be.

01

The embroidery

A narrow gold galloon braid marks out the orphrey panel and follows the neckline and the whole curve of the hem. At the head of the panel a budded cross with fleur-tipped arms is worked in gold over deeper rose. Beneath it the word PAX is set in gold letters inside a band of strapwork, and below that three quatrefoil medallions each hold a small cross in rose and gold, linked by curling strapwork. A foliate scroll closes the panel at the hem.

The back is left plain, with a small gold cross at the neck and the same gold braid along the hem, so the colour itself carries the vestment when the priest turns to the altar.

02

Liturgical use

Rose is worn on Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, and Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. Both take their names from the first word of the entrance antiphon, Rejoice, and the lightened colour signals that the feast is near.

Its use is optional: where no rose vestment is kept, violet is worn on both days. Rose is not used on any other day of the year, and it does not replace violet elsewhere in Advent or Lent.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The cloth is a soft-finish rose that holds the muted tone under artificial light rather than reading pink, and the embroidery is stitched into the panel rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large. For a parish set that will be worn by whoever is celebrating, a standard size is usually the better choice; choose Made to Measure when it is being cut for one priest.

05

Ordering for a date

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 days, and delivery typically takes a further 10–15 days. Gaudete and Laetare are fixed dates in the calendar and orders cluster before both, so order early or write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will tell you what is still possible.

Care

Dry clean only. Storage matters more than cleaning for a rose set, because it spends fifty weeks of the year put away.

  • Hang it on a broad padded hanger in a closed garment bag or vestment press, out of daylight. Rose fades unevenly and it is the fold lines that show.
  • Clean it before it goes away for the year rather than after it comes out, so nothing has a season to set into the cloth.
  • Press from the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the vestment, never over the embroidery.

FAQs

Before you order

When is rose worn?

On two Sundays of the year: Gaudete Sunday, the third of Advent, and Laetare Sunday, the fourth of Lent. Both take their names from the first word of the entrance antiphon, Rejoice, and rose lightens the violet of the season as a sign that the feast is near.

It is optional. Where no rose vestment is kept, violet is worn on both days instead.

Is rose the same as pink?

They are not treated as the same thing in the sacristy. Liturgical rose is understood as violet lightened towards the feast, so it should read as a muted, slightly dusty pink with warmth in it, not as a bright or candy pink.

This chasuble is cut in that muted tone, and the orphrey is worked in deeper rose and gold rather than in a contrasting colour, so the whole garment stays within the one family.

What does PAX mean on the orphrey?

Pax is simply the Latin for peace, one of the oldest words worked into Christian ornament and the greeting the priest gives at Mass. It is set here in gold letters inside a strapwork cartouche, directly under the cross.

Below it three quatrefoil medallions each hold a small cross, a quiet repetition that carries the panel down to the hem.

Is a rose chasuble worth buying for two Sundays a year?

That is the honest question, and the honest answer is that it depends on the parish. Rose is optional, and a church that has never used it loses nothing liturgically by staying in violet.

What it does buy is a visible marker in the middle of a long penitential season, which many congregations notice and remember. Because it is worn twice a year it also outlasts every other vestment in the press, so a good rose set is usually bought once in a generation.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen on height suits most wearers. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

If this is a parish set rather than a personal one, a standard size is usually the better choice, since it will be worn by whoever is celebrating. Choose Made to Measure when it is being cut for one priest.

How should a vestment used twice a year be stored?

Storage matters more than cleaning for a rose set, because it spends fifty weeks of the year put away. Hang it on a broad padded hanger in a closed garment bag or a vestment press, out of daylight; rose fades unevenly and the fold lines are what show.

Dry clean only, and clean it before it goes away for the year rather than after it comes out, so nothing has a season to set into the cloth. Press from the reverse with a cloth, never over the embroidery.
