Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This ivory priest stole depicts Saint Michael the Archangel in full pictorial detail: an armoured, winged figure raising a sword in one hand and holding scales in the other, framed above and below by winged seraphim, with a grey dragon underfoot near the hem.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel runs a narrative rather than a repeated pattern. A small gold seraphim head sits at the top, then the figure of the Archangel Michael in armour, worked in gold, blue, grey and flesh-toned thread, sword raised in one hand and the scales of justice held in the other. A second seraphim head follows, then a further winged, haloed figure set against gold scrollwork, and at the very bottom, near the fringed hem, a grey dragon with a red tongue lies underfoot. The sword and scales are Michael's standard attributes, representing the defence of the faithful and the weighing of souls, and the dragon beneath his feet is the traditional image of the defeated adversary from Revelation 12. It is worked as a scene rather than as symbols alone.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory and gold belong to the white liturgical colour class. This design is written for Michaelmas, the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels on 29 September, and for the feasts of the archangels more generally; the white ground also suits it to other solemn white-class Masses through the year. It is not intended for Lent, Advent, or the red or green seasons.

03

Who it is for

A priest marking Michaelmas or a parish dedicated to Saint Michael, and a striking ordination gift for a priest drawn to figural, narrative embroidery rather than symbolic motifs.

04

Length and fit

Finished length is 120 in (305 cm) standard, end to end over the shoulders, worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Any made-to-measure length between 84 in and 120 in is priced the same as standard; each further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in, adds $10. Give your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own. The length, height and any notes you enter carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

Dry clean only. Store rolled, not folded, so the dense figural embroidery keeps its shape and the ivory ground does not crease.

Keep out of direct sunlight, which dulls gold thread over time, and press from the reverse side only, avoiding the fringe at the hem.

FAQs

Before you order

Can this be worn for feasts other than Michaelmas?

It is written primarily for Michaelmas and the feasts of the archangels, but the white-and-gold ground belongs to the wider white liturgical class, so it also suits other solemn white-class Masses through the year. The pictorial Saint Michael scene reads most fittingly on angel-themed occasions.

Is the archangel scene visible from the back?

No. The back neck yoke and panels are plain ivory with gold braid edging only; the pictorial scene of Saint Michael, the seraphim and the dragon appears solely on the front-facing panels.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
