Overview

What this piece is

An ivory chasuble with a full-length royal blue velvet orphrey, embroidered with a crowned Marian M in a gold gothic arch and a flowering vine of lilies and stars.

The collar and the cuff bands are cut from the same velvet and worked with gold fleur-de-lys. A white-class vestment for Marian feasts, weddings and ordinations. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The letter M beneath a crown is the Marian monogram, and the crown marks the Queenship of Mary.

The white lilies stand for purity, the gold stars scattered through the vine recall the crown of twelve stars in Revelation 12, and the fleur-de-lys at the hem is itself an old Marian device.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory chasuble with a full-length royal blue velvet orphrey, embroidered with a crowned Marian M inside a gold gothic arch and a flowering vine of lilies and stars running the length of the panel. The collar and the cuff bands are cut from the same blue velvet and worked with gold fleur-de-lys.

01

The embroidery

The orphrey runs from collar to hem in blue velvet, held between two bands of woven gold galloon. A gold gothic arch at the top encloses the crowned letter M, with white lilies opening at its foot. From there a flowering vine climbs the panel, carrying white lilies, small coloured blossoms and gold stars, and closes at the hem with a large gold fleur-de-lys.

The standing collar is faced in blue velvet and set with gold fleur-de-lys, and each sleeve ends in a velvet cuff band worked with the same device and edged in gold. The back is left plain ivory, so the blue collar and cuffs carry the design when the priest faces the altar.

02

Liturgical use

The blue is ornament; the vestment is ivory, which belongs to the white class. It is made first for Marian solemnities and feasts — the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, the Nativity of Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, Guadalupe and Lourdes — and for the May and October devotions.

Because ivory is a white-class colour it is equally correct at Christmas and Easter, at weddings, and at ordinations and first Masses, which is why this piece is often chosen as an ordination gift. It is not worn in Advent or Lent, at Pentecost, or in Ordinary Time.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The ground is a smooth ivory cloth with a soft finish; the orphrey, collar and cuffs are velvet, laid on and edged with woven gold galloon, and the embroidery is stitched into the velvet rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large. The cuff bands sit best when the width across is cut to the wearer, so it is worth doing if you have the measurements.

Care

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries a velvet orphrey with dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so it must not be pressed flat.

  • Velvet crushes permanently where it is folded. Always hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the orphrey.
  • Ivory yellows in strong light and deep blue fades. Keep the vestment in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Lift the pile with light steam held away from the cloth rather than pressing it.

FAQs

Before you order

Is blue a liturgical colour?

Not in the ordinary Roman scheme, which knows white, red, green, violet, black and rose. Blue appears by the old Spanish privilege for the Immaculate Conception, and Sarum blue is widely used for Advent in Anglican and Lutheran churches.

That question does not arise here. The blue is the orphrey; the vestment itself is ivory, so it belongs to the white class and can be worn wherever white or gold is called for.

Which days is this chasuble made for?

Marian days first: the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, the Nativity of Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, Guadalupe and Lourdes, and the May and October devotions.

Because ivory is a white-class colour, it is also correct at Christmas and Easter, at weddings, and at ordinations and first Masses, which is why it is often bought as an ordination gift.

What is the crowned M in the gothic arch?

It is the Marian monogram, the letter M under a crown, one of the oldest and simplest ways of naming Our Lady on a vestment. The crown marks the Queenship of Mary.

The white lilies beside and beneath it stand for purity, the stars scattered through the vine recall the crown of twelve stars in Revelation 12, and the large gold fleur-de-lys at the hem is itself an old Marian device.

What are the blue bands at the ends of the sleeves?

They are velvet cuff bands, embroidered with gold fleur-de-lys and edged in gold galloon to match the collar and the orphrey. They give the chasuble a finished edge where the cloth falls over the arm, and they are visible from the side and from behind, where the back is otherwise plain.

If you would prefer the sleeves left plain, choose Made to Measure and say so in the order notes.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen on height suits most wearers. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, if you want a particular hem length, or if the chasuble is a gift and you know the wearer's measurements. The cuff bands sit better when the width across is cut to the wearer. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should the velvet orphrey be cared for?

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the vestment carries a velvet orphrey with dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so it must not be pressed flat.

  • Velvet crushes permanently where it is folded. Always hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger, never fold it across the orphrey.
  • Ivory yellows in strong light and deep blue fades. Keep the vestment in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Lift the pile with light steam held away from the cloth rather than pressing it.
