Details

About this cassock

A deep blue cassock robe with a contrast yoke across the shoulders, cut to pair with a rust-gold stole worked in Jerusalem crosses, offered in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock closing down the centre front, with a shaped yoke across the shoulders and around the collar in a contrasting rust gold. The yoke comes to a shallow point at the centre back, which is what breaks up the expanse of blue when the robe is seen from behind the altar. Two narrow gold bands sit above each cuff. Sleeves are long and straight, the skirt is cut full enough to walk in, and there is a centre vent through the back. No belt, no hood.

02

The stole

The matching stole is made in the same rust gold as the yoke, edged in gold on both long sides, and carries a Jerusalem cross worked in gold low on each tail. The Jerusalem cross is the large central cross with four smaller crosses in its quadrants, long associated with the five wounds and with pilgrimage to the Holy Land. A third, smaller cross sits at the neck. The stole hangs to the same depth as the robe's skirt break.

03

Cloth and finish

Both pieces are made in cotton with a matte face. The blue is a saturated true blue rather than a navy, and it holds that colour under warm chancel lighting instead of collapsing towards black; the rust gold reads as a warm ochre against it rather than as a yellow.

04

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the blue cassock with its rust gold yoke and cuff bands, without the stole. Robe + Stole adds the Jerusalem cross stole shown in the photographs and adds $80 at every size code. The photographs show the pair.

05

Who wears it

Blue is the Sarum colour for Advent in Anglican and Episcopal use and is widely worn for Marian feasts, and this robe suits a priest, pastor, minister or bishop who wants a blue that is unmistakably liturgical rather than navy. Because the blue and the Jerusalem cross carry no denominational insignia, the pairing crosses traditions comfortably.

06

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. The gold thread in the Jerusalem crosses will not survive a domestic wash cycle, and a saturated blue can bleed into the rust yoke if the robe is laundered at home.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over the embroidery. Hang the robe full length and store the stole flat or loosely rolled so no crease sets across the crosses.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
