Overview

What this piece is

An ivory gothic chasuble with the Christmas story in embroidered panels: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the shepherds and the Magi on the back, and the Holy Family and the Star of Bethlehem on the front.

For Christmas, the Holy Family and the Epiphany. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The four scenes follow the Gospels of Luke and Matthew from the Annunciation to the visit of the Magi, so the whole mystery of the Incarnation is carried on the priest's back.

The front shows Jesus, Mary and Joseph together as the Holy Family, beneath the star that announced the Child to the nations.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory gothic chasuble that tells the Christmas story in embroidered pictures. The back orphrey holds four gothic-arched panels on a deep blue ground, from the Annunciation to the coming of the Magi; the front orphrey, in gold damask, holds the Holy Family and the Star of Bethlehem.

01

The embroidery

The back is read from the collar down, like a window. In the first arch the angel Gabriel greets Mary. In the second, Mary and Joseph kneel at the manger. In the third, a shepherd kneels with his lamb, and in the last the three kings bring their gifts. Each scene is worked in coloured thread under a gold-coloured gothic arch, with small stars in the blue sky above.

The front column is gold damask edged with red and gold braid. Near the collar, under a pointed arch, Mary holds the Child with Joseph beside them; lower down, a second arch frames the Star of Bethlehem shining over the night sky. The neckline and outer hem are bound in gold-coloured braid.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class. This chasuble is made for the Christmas season: Christmas Day and its octave, the Feast of the Holy Family, Mary, Mother of God, and the Epiphany. Because it is white-class, it is equally correct on any other day that calls for white.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is ivory satin with a soft woven texture; the back orphrey is blue satin with pictorial embroidery in coloured and gold-coloured thread, and the front orphrey is gold damask satin.

FAQs

Before you order

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
