Overview

What this piece is

A Roman fiddleback chasuble in gold damask satin, lined in green, with an ivory cross carrying the Nativity star and the manger among red roses and white lilies.

For Christmas, the solemnities and the Traditional Latin Mass. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The star over the manger is the star of Bethlehem, set at the crossing so the Nativity is read through the cross.

The red rose and the white lily are Marian flowers: the rose for love and the lily for purity, honouring the Mother of the newborn Christ.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A Roman, or fiddleback, chasuble in gold damask satin for Christmas and the great solemnities, lined in deep green. An ivory cross on the back carries the star of the Nativity in a burst of gold rays above the manger of Bethlehem, with red roses and white lilies climbing on either side through gold-coloured acanthus.

01

The embroidery

On the back, a broad ivory cross outlined in gold-coloured braid fills the panel. At its crossing an eight-pointed star sends long gold rays down the upright, with acanthus scrolls in the arms. Beneath the star lies the manger, and below it a tall gold scroll runs to the hem. On the gold ground beside the cross, vines of gold-coloured acanthus carry full red roses and open white lilies.

The front column is ivory, edged in gold braid, with a small star at the collar and a climbing scroll of red roses and a white lily beneath it. The violin-shaped front is cut away at the sides to show the green lining.

02

Liturgical use

Gold may be worn in place of white on more solemn days. This chasuble is made first for Christmas, from the Midnight Mass through the octave, and suits Easter, the Epiphany and other solemnities just as well. Its Roman cut makes it a natural choice for the Traditional Latin Mass, and it is equally correct at the modern Roman Rite.

03

Cut and construction

Roman cut: two stiffened panels, front and back, joined at the shoulders, with the sides open to free the arms and the front narrowed at the waist into the fiddleback outline. The body is gold satin with a woven damask pattern, the cross and column are ivory satin, the embroidery is gold-coloured and coloured thread, and the panels are lined in green satin.

04

Sizing and Made to Measure

The Roman cut is shorter and narrower than a gothic chasuble, so it is graded differently. Choose a standard size by height, or choose Made to Measure and enter your own measurements; if you would like the finished length of a standard size before ordering, write to support@theclergycouture.com. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

05

Ordering for a date

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days; delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States, or up to 21 business days elsewhere, with a faster Rush option at checkout. For Christmas, order early.

Care

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic embroidery and stiffened panels, so it must not be pressed flat.

  • Store flat in a vestment drawer or hang on a broad padded hanger; never fold across the embroidery.
  • Gold-coloured thread dulls with handling and damp air. Keep it covered and away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.

FAQs

Before you order

What is a fiddleback chasuble?

It is the Roman form of the chasuble: two stiffened panels, front and back, with the sides cut away to free the arms. The front is narrowed at the waist, which gives the violin outline the name comes from.

It is the shape most associated with the Traditional Latin Mass, and it may equally be worn at the modern Roman Rite. Because the cut is different from a full gothic chasuble, Made to Measure is the surest choice if you have your measurements.

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
