Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This stole is worked on a mustard-gold ground with a faint self-toned damask pattern, and carries a repeating vine of wheat sheaves and grape clusters down each panel. It is designed for Harvest and Thanksgiving use.

01

Design and symbolism

A small cross sits near the top of each panel, then the embroidery settles into a repeat: a wheat sheaf bound with a ribbon, followed by a cluster of green grapes among rust-orange, maple-shaped leaves, run in brown, green and cream thread against the gold ground. Wheat and the grape-bearing vine are the standing emblems of bread and wine, and here they are drawn specifically as harvested and gathered — sheaves rather than standing stalks, ripe clusters rather than open flowers — which is what ties the motif to a harvest theme rather than to Communion alone. A small wheat sprig repeats at the back neck. The panel edges close in a dark gold-brown woven band, and the ends finish in twisted fringe in the same tones.

02

Liturgical use

Gold is not one of the seven colours recognised across every tradition; where a parish uses it, it most often stands in as a richer alternative to white on the greatest solemnities, such as Christmas Day or Easter. Separately from that, gold and its close relative yellow are a widespread custom for Harvest Festival and Thanksgiving services, which is the reading this stole's wheat-and-grape design supports directly. It is not a substitute for violet in Lent or Advent, nor for the green of ordinary Sundays outside a harvest observance.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister leading a Harvest Festival, a Thanksgiving service, or any Communion service where the congregation uses gold for its most solemn occasions.

04

Length and fit

Finished length is 120 in (305 cm) standard, measured end to end over both shoulders in a presbyteral cut worn straight down each side. Any length from 84 in to 120 in is made to measure at no extra cost; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in up to 160 in. Give your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or enter your own — whichever you choose travels through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

Can a gold stole be worn instead of white?

In many parishes, yes: gold is treated as an alternative to white for the most solemn days, such as Christmas or Easter Day, though it is not one of the seven colours recognised in every tradition.

Whether your congregation makes that substitution is a matter of local custom, so it is worth checking before you order for a specific Sunday.

Is this stole tied to one specific harvest date?

No. Harvest and Thanksgiving observances fall on different dates depending on country and denomination, and this stole's wheat-and-grape design is built to suit any of them.

It also works for any other Communion service where your parish uses gold as its colour.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
