Overview

What this piece is

An ivory gothic chasuble with terracotta orphreys: the San Damiano crucifix, the Tau, doves on an olive vine, and Brother Sun and Sister Moon, in gold-coloured and natural-toned thread.

For St Francis, Franciscan feasts and professions, and any white-class day. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The San Damiano crucifix is the icon-cross before which St Francis heard the call to 'rebuild my Church'. The Tau was his own signature and blessing, drawn from Ezekiel 9:4.

The sun and moon recall his Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon, and the doves and olive branches his greeting of peace.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory gothic chasuble for Franciscan friars, parishes and feasts, with terracotta orphreys embroidered in gold-coloured and natural-toned thread. The back carries the San Damiano crucifix, the cross that spoke to St Francis, above the sun, the moon and the Tau; the front carries the Tau above an olive vine filled with doves.

01

The embroidery

On the back, a Y-shaped orphrey frames the San Damiano crucifix inside a gold quatrefoil, with doves and olive sprays running out along the yoke. Down the column, olive branches climb between a radiant gold sun, a silver crescent moon and, at the hem, a gold Tau cross in a roundel.

The front column opens with the Tau inside a quatrefoil at the collar. Beneath it a slender olive vine climbs the panel with white doves perched among the leaves, and the column closes with the radiant sun at the hem. Both orphreys are edged in gold-coloured braid, and the outer hem is bound in a matching gold trim.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class. This chasuble suits the Feast of St Francis of Assisi (4 October), the Stigmata of St Francis, St Clare and the other Franciscan feasts, and any profession, jubilee or patronal Mass in a Franciscan house or parish. Because it is white-class, it is equally correct at Christmas, at Easter and on any day that calls for white.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is ivory satin with a soft woven texture, the orphreys are terracotta satin worked with gold-coloured, silver-coloured and coloured thread, and the chasuble is lined in a gold-toned satin.

FAQs

Before you order

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
