Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A red velvet-look stole embroidered with a scallop shell, the Cross of Saint James, a pilgrim's staff and a starry winding path.

For the Feast of Saint James and pilgrimage ministry.

Symbolism

The scallop shell is the traditional badge of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The Cross of Saint James, shaped like a sword, marks the military order named for the saint. The staff and gourd are the pilgrim's traditional equipment, and the starry path recalls the old association between the Milky Way and the route to Compostela.

Details

About this stole

This stole follows a single pilgrim's route down each panel: a scallop shell at the top, the sword-shaped Cross of Saint James below it, then a pilgrim's staff hung with a gourd, and finally a winding path scattered with small stars leading to the fringe. It is worked on a red velvet-look ground, and can be tailored to your length.

01

Design and symbolism

Each element here belongs to the same tradition. The scallop shell is the long-standing badge of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, carried by pilgrims as proof of the journey and worn to this day along the Camino routes. Below it sits the Cross of Saint James, a stylised cross shaped like a sword, worked here in red thread rather than gold - the one motif on the front not picked out in metallic thread. The pilgrim's staff and hanging gourd are the traditional equipment of the medieval pilgrim, shown carrying water for the road, and the winding gold path scattered with stars evokes both the physical route and the old belief that the Milky Way itself points the way to Compostela. Gold fringe finishes both hems, and the back of the piece shows a warm gold-tan tone rather than red, the reverse face of the two-tone fabric.

02

Liturgical use

Red covers a wide range of occasions - the feasts of martyrs and apostles among them - and the Feast of Saint James on 25 July is a natural fit for a piece built entirely around his iconography. Beyond that specific day, this stole suits pilgrimage ministries, Camino blessing services, and any occasion where a parish or chaplaincy wants to mark a connection to Saint James or to pilgrimage more broadly, rather than a fixed place in the temporal cycle of Sundays and seasons.

03

Who it is for

Cut as a presbyteral stole for a priest, it is suited to clergy involved in pilgrimage ministry, chaplains attached to a Camino route, or as an ordination gift for someone with a particular devotion to Saint James.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders, and lengths from 84 in to 120 in made to measure cost the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own figure; the length, height and any notes you give travel through to your cart, checkout and order.

Dry clean only, and let your cleaner know the ground is a velvet-look fabric, which crushes if folded or pressed directly. Store the stole rolled rather than folded on a padded hanger where possible, keep it out of direct sunlight, and press only the reverse face on a low setting.

FAQs

Before you order

What do the shell and staff on this stole represent?

The scallop shell is the long-standing badge of pilgrims walking the Camino to Santiago de Compostela, traditionally carried as proof of the journey. The staff and hanging gourd are the pilgrim's basic equipment, used to carry water on the road. Together with the Cross of Saint James below the shell, they set out the full iconography of the pilgrimage in a single design.

Is this stole tied to a specific feast day?

It suits the Feast of Saint James on 25 July especially well, given its subject, but it is not limited to that one day. Because red covers a broad range of occasions, this piece also works for pilgrimage and Camino-related ministries, chaplaincy services connected to a pilgrim route, and as a gift for clergy with a particular devotion to Saint James.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
