Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

A violet Lent stole with a continuous gold-and-silver crown-of-thorns vine and a Chi Rho, INRI and cross medallion at each hem.

Symbolism

The crown of thorns recalls Christ's Passion; the Chi Rho, formed from the first two Greek letters of Christ's name, is one of the oldest Christian monograms; the INRI banner reproduces the inscription placed over the cross at the crucifixion.

Details

About this stole

This Lent stole is built around a single running image: a twisted crown-of-thorns vine, worked in gold and silver thread, that climbs the full length of each violet panel from shoulder to hem. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

The thorn vine is the dominant motif here, and it runs uninterrupted down both panels rather than sitting as a single end motif. Near the base of each panel the vine gathers into a circular medallion: a crown of thorns enclosing a Chi Rho monogram, the ancient combination of the Greek letters chi and rho that begin the name of Christ. Below the medallion sits a small INRI banner - the Latin initials placed over the cross at the crucifixion, meaning "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" - and a small plain cross. Gold beaded fringe finishes each hem. At the back neck, a single cross flanked by two small thorn sprigs echoes the front design in miniature.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is the colour of Lent across the Roman, Anglican and Lutheran traditions, and this stole's Passion imagery - the thorns, the INRI banner - makes it a piece for the Lenten weeks specifically rather than for Advent, where the same violet is worn without the Passion references. It suits the Sundays and weekday services of Lent, Ash Wednesday, and Passiontide services in the weeks before Easter. Good Friday itself is kept in red in the Roman Rite, so this violet piece stays in the wardrobe on that day even though its imagery points toward the crucifixion.

03

Who it is for

Cut as a presbyteral stole for a priest, pastor or deacon, it is suited to a minister who wants the Passion narrative made visible through the whole of Lent, not just held back for Holy Week. It also reads well as a Lenten or ordination gift for clergy with a taste for symbol-dense embroidery.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for each further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length from the height you enter, though you can set your own figure instead; your length, height and any notes are carried through to checkout and the order itself.

Care

Dry clean only, and ask your cleaner to handle the beaded fringe by hand rather than by machine, since the beads can catch. Store the stole rolled rather than folded, keep it out of direct sunlight, and press only from the reverse on a low setting, working around the thorn-vine embroidery rather than over it.

FAQs

Before you order

What do the Chi Rho and INRI on this stole mean?

Chi Rho is one of the earliest Christian monograms, formed from the first two Greek letters of the word "Christ". INRI reproduces the Latin initials placed over the cross at the crucifixion, short for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". Together with the crown-of-thorns vine, they set out the Passion narrative that this stole is built around.

Is this stole worn on Good Friday?

Not in the Roman Rite, where Good Friday is kept in red rather than violet. This stole's Passion imagery suits the Lenten weeks and Passiontide leading up to Holy Week, and Ash Wednesday, but the Triduum itself calls for a different vestment. Some traditions vary on this point, so it is worth checking your own parish's custom.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
