Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A violet stole with a continuous silver and gold vine running each panel to a small tree motif at the hem.

Made for Advent and Lent.

Symbolism

The running vine recalls the image of Christ as the vine and believers as its branches in John 15; the tree motif at the hem echoes the tree of life that appears at both ends of the Christian scriptures. A small geometric emblem paired with a bird-like shape sits partway down each panel, worked into the vine in the same silver-white and gold thread.

Details

About this stole

Where our other violet stoles keep their embroidery to the ends, this one is worked almost edge to edge: a continuous vine of silver-white leaves and gold buds climbs each panel from the shoulder down to a small stylised tree trunk at the hem. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

The vine is the whole design. It runs the full length of both panels in silver-white leaves and gold flower buds, gathering partway down into a small geometric emblem paired with a bird-like shape worked into the vine. Near the hem, the vine resolves into a stylised tree trunk with curling gold roots and branches. Read together, vine and tree draw on two related images long used in Christian art: the grapevine of John 15, with Christ as the vine and believers as the branches, and the tree of life that opens and closes the Christian scriptures. Purple-and-gold beaded fringe finishes each end, and gold piping runs the length of both edges. The back is left plain, with only the piped collar carried through.

02

Liturgical use

Violet belongs to both Advent and Lent in the Roman, Anglican and Lutheran calendars, and this stole is cut for either season rather than one alone - there is no Passion-specific imagery here of the kind that would tie it to Lent only. It suits Advent Sundays, Lenten Sundays and weekdays, and votive services in a penitential key. As with any violet piece, it is not a stand-in for the Sarum or Advent blue kept in some Anglican parishes, and it is not worn on Good Friday, when the Roman Rite calls for red.

03

Who it is for

The density of the embroidery suits a priest, pastor or deacon who wants a violet stole with real visual weight for the front of the church, rather than a plain working piece. It also makes a substantial Advent or Lenten gift for clergy who already own a simple violet stole and want something richer for the same two seasons.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders, and lengths from 84 in to 120 in made to measure cost the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own; the length, height and any notes you give travel through to your cart, checkout and the finished order.

See it alongside our violet vestments and Advent vestments, the wider clergy stole range, or read our fabric guide for more on how we describe embroidery density.

Care

Dry clean only, taking care with the beaded tassel fringe, which can catch on rough surfaces. Store the stole rolled rather than folded so the dense vine embroidery does not crease, keep it away from direct sunlight, and press from the reverse only, avoiding the embroidered panels.

FAQs

Before you order

What does the vine and tree embroidery represent?

The running vine draws on Christ's words in John 15, where he calls himself the vine and his followers the branches. The stylised tree at the base of each panel echoes the tree of life that appears in both Genesis and Revelation. Together they are a single continuous image rather than two separate motifs.

Does the vine motif include any shapes besides leaves and buds?

Yes. Partway down each panel the vine gathers into a small geometric emblem paired with a bird-like shape, worked in the same silver-white and gold thread as the rest of the vine, before continuing down toward the tree trunk at the hem.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
