Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Details

About this stole

A single bare tree, rendered in gold and silver, grows from its roots at the hem of each panel up to a star or a sun at the shoulder, with small symbols worked directly onto its branches along the way. It is designed as an Advent Jesse Tree stole for the O Antiphon days at the close of the season.

01

Design and symbolism

The ground is a deep purple satin, plain and smooth, with no self-pattern texture, edging or fringe. On each panel a stylised bare tree, worked in gold and silver metallic thread, rises from roots at the hem to a star on the left panel and a sun on the right. Small symbols are threaded into the branches on the way up: a further star, a gold key, an oil lamp, a gold crown, and, on the left panel, a small round object resembling a glass orb or vessel. The reverse is plain purple satin, unembroidered.

The Jesse Tree traces the ancestry of Christ back to Jesse, father of David, taking its name from Isaiah's image of a shoot rising from Jesse's root. The star, key, lamp and crown worked into the branches here are drawn from the O Antiphons sung in the final days of Advent, each of which addresses Christ under a different Old Testament title.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is the customary Advent colour in most western traditions, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and Methodist common use, and this stole belongs to that season specifically, not to Lent, where violet is also worn but the imagery here would not fit. It is not intended for the white and gold season, Pentecost's red, or the green of Ordinary Time.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister who wants a graphic, single-tree treatment of the Jesse Tree theme, rather than a set of individual medallions, is the person this design suits. If you would prefer the fuller version with circular medallions, a reclining figure and embroidered Latin text, see our other Jesse Tree Advent stole, which is a visually distinct piece from this one despite the similar name.

04

Length and fit

We finish this stole at a standard 120 in (305 cm) over both shoulders, end to end, and treat anything from 84 in up to that same 120 in as standard pricing too. Ask for more length than that, as far as 160 in, and each extra 5 in adds $10. Give your height on the product page and the form will propose a length; change it if your own measurement differs, and that figure, together with your height and any notes, is recorded with your order.

Care

Dry clean only. Violet dyes can fade with repeated exposure to light, so store the stole away from the sun between Advents.

Store rolled, not folded, to protect the tree embroidery, and press from the reverse if needed, taking care around the gold and silver metallic thread.

FAQs

Before you order

How is this different from your other Jesse Tree Advent stole?

This design threads its symbols directly onto the branches of a single tree, has no fringe, and carries no embroidered text. Our other Jesse Tree stole instead sets six circular medallions per panel, a reclining crowned figure, beaded fringe and the embroidered words RORATE CAELI, and reads as the richer, more figural of the two designs.

What is the small round motif worked among the branches?

It's a small round shape resembling a glass orb or vessel, worked in gold thread among the branches on the left panel, alongside the star, key, oil lamp and crown that make up the O Antiphon symbols.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
