Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Details

About this stole

Six circular medallions climb each panel of this violet stole, each carrying a small Old Testament image along the vine of Jesse, ending near the hem in a reclining crowned figure and the embroidered words Rorate Caeli. It is designed for Advent, for the Rorate Mass, and for ordinations.

01

Design and symbolism

The ground is a deep purple satin, framed on each panel by a gold-tan bordered band that runs the length of the embroidered column, itself edged in matching gold-tan trim along both long edges. Each panel opens at the top with a gold crown, then a gold vine with green leaves descends through six medallions: on the left panel, an apple, an ark on the waves, a ladder, flames, the tablets of the law and a ram's horn; on the right, a serpent, an open book, a striped cloth, a pair of sandals, a harp and a six-pointed star. Near the hem the vine forms into roots, beneath which sits a small reclining crowned figure worked in gold, and below that the words Rorate Caeli are embroidered in gold on the purple ground. Champagne-gold beaded fringe finishes both hems, and the back neck carries a single gold star at its point.

The medallions set small scenes from the Old Testament along the line of Jesse, father of David, as stations in the history that Advent recalls leading toward Christ; the striped cloth among the smaller icons is worked as a plain draped or folded length of fabric rather than a more specific emblem. The reclining crowned figure at the root most plausibly reads as Jesse himself, the root from which the tree grows. Rorate Caeli, "drop down, ye heavens", opens the Advent introit drawn from Isaiah 45:8 and gives the stole its name.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is the customary Advent colour across most western traditions. The Latin text here, and the specific reference to the Rorate Mass, a votive Advent devotion, sit most naturally in Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic use, where that Latin tradition is retained; other traditions that keep a plainer Advent may prefer our Jesse Tree stole without lettering. It is not intended for Lent, where violet is also worn but this specific Advent imagery would be out of place.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister marking the full run of Advent, and especially the Rorate Mass or an O Antiphon service, is the intended wearer, and the density of imagery also suits it as an ordination gift for someone ordained during Advent.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders, with any length between 84 in and 120 in made at the same price. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, to a maximum of 160 in. The product page suggests a length from your height, which you may override; the length, height and any notes you give travel through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. Ask your cleaner to handle the beaded fringe with care, as beading can catch on rough surfaces and jewellery.

Store rolled, not folded, hang or lay the fringe flat rather than letting it tangle, keep it out of sunlight, and press from the reverse only, well clear of the medallions and the beading.

FAQs

Before you order

What do the six medallions on each panel show?

The left panel carries an apple, an ark on the waves, a ladder, flames, the tablets of the law and a ram's horn. The right panel carries a serpent, an open book, a striped cloth, a pair of sandals, a harp and a six-pointed star. The striped cloth among them is worked as a simple folded or draped length of fabric, described here by appearance rather than tied to one specific reference.

What does Rorate Caeli mean and why is it on this stole?

Rorate Caeli, Latin for "drop down, ye heavens", opens the Advent introit taken from Isaiah 45:8 and gives its name to the Rorate Mass, a votive Advent devotion held before dawn in some parishes.

The Latin text sits most naturally in Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic use, where that tradition is retained; if your own worship does not use Latin text, our other Jesse Tree stole without lettering may suit better.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
