Details
About this stole
This is a plain violet stole for the penitential half of the year, finished simply: a faint tone-on-tone diamond weave in the cloth, a thread of gold piping down each edge, and a small gold Jerusalem cross worked above the fringe at each end. It can be tailored to your own length.
Design and symbolism
The decoration here is restrained by design. Each end of the stole carries one Jerusalem cross: a larger cross at the centre with four smaller crosses set at its corners, worked in gold thread. The motif is traditionally read as the five wounds of Christ, or as a charge to carry the gospel to the four corners of the earth; it has no fixed denominational home and appears across Catholic, Anglican and ecumenical vestment-making alike. Below each cross, gold bullion fringe finishes the hem. There is no other embroidery on the panel: the violet ground itself, woven with a faint self-coloured diamond lattice, is left to do the work. Turn the stole over and the reverse is a plain ivory-cream satin, visible along the inside edge when the stole is worn open.
Liturgical use
Violet is the colour of Advent and Lent in the Roman, Anglican and Lutheran calendars alike, and of penitential rites generally. This stole is built for that use: weekday and Sunday services in either season, Ash Wednesday, and votive services of a penitential character. It is not a Holy Week piece in the strict sense - Palm Sunday and Good Friday call for red in the Roman Rite, not violet, so keep this stole for the weeks that lead up to the Triduum rather than the Triduum itself. Where a parish keeps Sarum or Advent blue instead of violet, this is not that stole; it is a true violet.
Who it is for
Cut as a presbyteral stole, worn straight down over both shoulders, it suits a priest, pastor or deacon who wants a plain, unfussy violet for regular penitential-season wear rather than a heavily worked showpiece. It also works as a modest ordination or clergy-anniversary gift for someone who already owns a more elaborate set and needs a working stole for Lent.
Length and fit
Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders, and any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page and it will suggest a length; you are free to override it. The length, the height you gave and any notes you leave travel through to your cart, checkout and order.
