Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Overview

What this piece is

Symbolism

The rose set among thorns is a traditional image of beauty carried through suffering, fitting for Lent's penitence and Advent's waiting. The small silver teardrops threaded through the vine may be read as dew or as drops shed alongside the thorns.

Details

About this stole

A small silver cross sits at the top of each panel of this velvet-look stole, above a vine of thorny stems, dark burgundy roses and silver teardrop shapes that runs the full length to a lavender fringe. It is designed for Lent and for Advent, the two seasons that share the colour violet.

01

Design and symbolism

The front-facing panels are a deep purple, close to eggplant, with a velvet-look surface, noticeably different from the lighter lavender satin-look reverse of the same stole; the back neck triangle carries this same dark velvet with a small silver leaf emblem, while the hanging back panels themselves read in the lighter lavender. A small silver embroidered cross sits near the top of each front panel. Below it, a vertical vine of silver-grey thorny stems alternates with three dark red roses per panel, with small silver teardrop shapes threaded through the vine. Silver-gold piping edges the stole, and a lavender twisted fringe, lighter than the main body, finishes both hems.

The rose set among thorns is a long-standing image of beauty carried through suffering, which suits Lent's penitence and Advent's watchful waiting alike. The small silver teardrops threaded among the thorns may be read as dew or, alongside the thorns, as drops shed on the way; we would not press either reading as the fixed one, since the design carries no single stated meaning.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is worn in Lent and in Advent in most western traditions, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and common Methodist use, though not universally, and some Anglican parishes keep blue rather than violet for Advent. This stole is not intended for Easter or Christmas, when white and gold are worn, for Pentecost or martyrs' feasts, when red is customary, or for the green of Ordinary Time.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister presiding through Lent or Advent is the intended wearer, and the design also suits an ordination gift for someone ordained in either penitential season. It is not a substitute for a true rose vestment: see the note below on Gaudete and Laetare Sundays if that distinction matters to your order.

04

Length and fit

Our standard finish for this stole is 120 in (305 cm), taken end to end over both shoulders, and a made-to-measure order anywhere between 84 in and that figure costs no more. Go longer, up to 160 in, and we add $10 per extra 5 in. The product page will turn a height you give it into a suggested length, which you can accept or replace with your own number; either way it travels with your height and any notes through the cart to your final order.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell your cleaner the front is velvet-look and the reverse is a lighter satin-look lavender, as the two finishes can need different handling.

Store rolled rather than folded, since velvet crushes where it is creased, and never iron the front directly; steam very lightly if needed, always from the reverse lavender panel.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this the same as a rose vestment for Gaudete or Laetare Sunday?

No. This is a violet stole; the roses are an embroidered flower motif on a purple ground, not the separate liturgical rose, or pink, colour worn on Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent.

If you need a true rose-coloured vestment for one of those two Sundays, look for a piece described as rose or pink rather than this violet design.

Why does the back of the stole look lighter than the front?

The front-facing panels are a deep purple, velvet-look cloth, while the reverse and hanging back panels are a lighter lavender, satin-look fabric. Both are part of the stole's construction, not a fault; it is a deliberate two-tone build.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
