Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A white clergy stole with a gold Tree of Life on each panel, its leaves shading through the full rainbow from trunk to crown, rooted in a Celtic knot, with a small gold cross near the collar.

For Easter, weddings, ordinations and services that draw on the rainbow as a sign of covenant.

Symbolism

The rainbow recalls the covenant sign given after the flood in Genesis 9, God's promise held over creation. Joined here to the Tree of Life and its Celtic-knot roots, an image of unbroken, continuous life, the two motifs together speak of promise and of life that does not end.

Details

About this stole

This is a clergy stole in white, each panel carrying a gold-trunked Tree of Life whose leaves shade through the full spectrum, warm tones on the left, cool tones on the right, rooted in a Celtic knot near the hem, with a small gold cross near the collar. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

A small gold cross sits near the top of each panel, below which a gold trunk opens into a canopy of leaves worked in a rainbow gradient, yellow through red on the left panel, green through purple on the right. At the base, the roots interlace into a Celtic knot, a continuous, unbroken line with no beginning or end. The stitching has a dimensional, textured quality consistent with raised embroidery. Taken together, the rainbow recalls the sign God set in the sky after the flood in Genesis 9, a covenant held over the whole of creation; joined to a tree whose roots never break, the two motifs speak of a promise that does not lapse. Rainbow imagery of this kind is also used today in inclusive and affirming ministry settings, and this stole reads equally well in that context. There is no fringe at the hem; gold cord edges the stole instead.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is a class worn across many of the church's high days rather than one season alone, and this stole draws on Easter most directly, when new life is the day's subject. It is not tied to Lent or to a penitential season, where its brightness would not fit.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister will find this suits an Easter service, a wedding where they are officiating, an ordination gift, or a service in a parish that draws explicitly on rainbow imagery as a sign of welcome.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), end to end over both shoulders. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page suggests a length, which you can override; your confirmed figure travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

This stole has a pale white ground and dimensional rainbow stitching, with no fringe. Dry clean only.

  • Store rolled, not folded, so the raised stitching keeps its shape
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, since white fabric shows fading and marking quickly
  • Press from the reverse on a low setting, avoiding direct heat on the raised leaf clusters
  • Handle with clean, dry hands to keep the white ground free of marks

FAQs

Before you order

What does the rainbow leaf colouring mean on this stole?

The rainbow is a documented biblical sign: in Genesis 9, God sets a bow in the clouds as the mark of a covenant not to destroy creation again by flood. Read alongside the Tree of Life, whose roots here form an unbroken Celtic knot, the two images together suggest a promise that holds.

Rainbow colouring is also widely used today, outside any single scriptural reading, as a sign of welcome in inclusive and affirming ministry contexts. We note both readings rather than assert one as the only meaning; you are best placed to know which fits your own congregation.

Can this stole be worn for occasions other than Easter?

Yes. As a white and gold stole it is not limited to Easter Sunday; the white class covers a range of high days, weddings and other festal occasions through the year, and many wearers order it specifically for a wedding or as an ordination gift rather than for Easter alone.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
