Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A white satin stole with a gold sunburst bearing the letters Alpha and Omega near the collar, a vine of pink and white Easter lilies with small butterflies, and an embroidered empty tomb at the hem.

Worn for Easter Sunday, the Easter Vigil and through Eastertide.

Symbolism

Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, name Christ as beginning and end.

The lily is a standard Easter image of new life, and the small butterflies worked among them carry the same idea; the empty tomb at the hem states plainly what the rest of the design points to.

Details

About this stole

The White Easter Resurrection Stole opens near the collar with a gold sunburst bearing the letters Alpha and Omega, runs down through a vine of pink and white Easter lilies with small butterflies caught among the leaves, and closes at the hem with an embroidered empty tomb.

01

Design and symbolism

The sunburst and lettering near the collar name Christ as Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, a title drawn directly from Revelation. Below it a lily vine runs the length of the panel, shaded in soft pink and white rather than worked flat in gold, with small butterflies, a common resurrection image, set among the flowers. The butterflies are worked small enough that they read as a detail rather than a second motif competing with the lilies for attention. The design closes at the hem with the empty tomb itself, shown as a stone cave opening. Read together, sunburst, lily, butterfly and tomb all point to the same event without needing a figure of Christ to state it directly.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is worn from the Easter Vigil through Easter Sunday and on through Eastertide to Pentecost. Because the design speaks so directly to resurrection, it also suits a funeral Mass where the family has asked for that theme to be kept in view, though it is not a stole for Lent, Advent or the black or violet observances that come before Easter.

03

Who it is for

Cut for a priest, pastor or minister taking the principal Easter services, in the presbyteral style worn straight down both shoulders. Its pastel palette also suits a baptism or confirmation held during Eastertide, where a softer thread colour reads more gently than a stole worked entirely in gold.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or give us your own measurement. Your length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order.

06

Care

Dry clean only. The soft pink and gold shaded thread work should not go through a home wash or dryer, which can flatten the shading.

Store rolled, not folded, to keep the lily vine free of crease lines, and away from direct sunlight, which fades pastel thread faster than gold-only work. Press from the reverse on a low setting, avoiding direct contact with the embroidered tomb at the hem.

FAQs

Before you order

Can this stole be worn at a funeral?

It can, where the family or the minister wants the service to centre on resurrection rather than mourning alone. White is used for a funeral Mass in some traditions for exactly this reason, though practice varies; check what your own parish or denomination expects before choosing it over black or violet.

What do the butterflies on this stole mean?

The small butterflies worked among the lilies are a traditional image of new life and transformation, used here alongside the empty tomb and the Alpha and Omega lettering to reinforce the resurrection theme of the whole design.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
