Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This green stole shades from sage at the shoulders to a deeper forest green at the hem, embroidered on both panels with a gold sunburst, two doves in flight, a gold tree with visible roots, a winding blue river carrying small fish, and sprays of gold wheat near the hem, the whole scene framed top and bottom by a gold-and-brown geometric band.

01

Design and symbolism

Unlike the plain-ground Franciscan stole elsewhere in this range, this design is worked on an ombre ground that shades from sage green at the shoulder to a deeper forest green at the hem, and it tells a landscape scene rather than a single motif: a gold sunburst and two white doves at the top, a gold tree with its roots showing at the base of the trunk, a blue river winding beneath it with small fish, and sprays of wheat near the hem. A decorative gold-and-brown band frames the scene at both top and bottom. The tree of life and the river together recall the vision in Revelation 22 of a tree bearing fruit beside "the river of the water of life," and the fish is a long-standing sign of the faithful and of baptism.

02

Liturgical use

Green is worn through Ordinary Time, the periods of the church year outside Advent, Christmastide, Lent and Eastertide. This creation-themed design suits Ordinary Time generally and reads particularly well for baptisms and harvest or thanksgiving services, where water and growth are already part of the day's imagery. It is not intended for Lent, Advent, or the white, red or rose seasons.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor presiding at a baptism, a harvest or creation-themed service, or simply wanting a scenic green stole with more narrative detail than a plain-ground Ordinary Time piece.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and lengths beyond 120 in, to a maximum of 160 in, add $10 for every further 5 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, which you can override with your own figure. Your chosen length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. Store rolled, not folded, so the ombre dye and the embroidered river scene keep their shape.

Keep out of direct sunlight, which fades an ombre ground unevenly if one section is exposed more than another, and press from the reverse side only, keeping clear of the gold-and-brown border band and the fringe.

FAQs

Before you order

Is the gold tone on the back a different colour option?

No, it is the reverse or lining fabric visible in that shot, not a second colourway. The green ombre face fabric is what shows when the stole is worn.

Is this stole appropriate for a baptism service?

Yes. The river and fish imagery, together with the tree of life, makes it a fitting choice for baptisms alongside its general use through Ordinary Time.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
