Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory satin stole with a white dove worked with long rainbow-gradient feather wings and a small gold cross near each hem.

For weddings, baptisms, confirmations and ordinations.

Symbolism

The dove is the standard Christian sign of the Holy Spirit, drawn from its descent at Christ's baptism in the Jordan. Here its wings are given a rainbow-gradient treatment as a decorative variation on that traditional image.

Details

About this stole

On this ivory stole, the dove of the Holy Spirit is given wings unlike any other piece in our range: each feather runs through a full rainbow gradient, from orange at the shoulder to violet at the tip, streaming most of the length of the panel. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

Near the top of each panel, a white dove in flight is worked with its wings elongated into long, gradient-coloured feathers that run down through orange, yellow, green, blue and purple before the colour fades out. A small gold cross sits low on each panel, near the hem, rather than at the very tip. There is no fringe; the edges are finished plain, with narrow gold piping the only trim. The dove is the standard Christian sign of the Holy Spirit, drawn from its descent at Christ's baptism in the Jordan; the rainbow gradient here is a decorative treatment of that same dove rather than a separate rainbow motif layered on top of it, which sets this piece apart from our burgundy dove-and-cross design elsewhere in the range.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class of vestments, used for the church's most joyful occasions rather than for a single season. The dove imagery points most naturally toward baptism, where the Holy Spirit's descent is central, and toward confirmation and ordination, where the same Spirit is invoked. It is not a Pentecost piece: Pentecost is kept in red in every tradition that observes it, so an ivory stole, however dove-heavy its design, stays in the wardrobe on that day.

03

Who it is for

Cut as a presbyteral stole, it suits a priest, pastor or minister officiating at a wedding, baptism or confirmation, and it works equally well as an ordination gift where the rainbow wing treatment will read as a personal, contemporary touch rather than a strict liturgical statement.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or enter your own figure; your length, height and any notes are carried through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only, and mention the pale ground to your cleaner, since ivory shows marks more readily than darker fabrics. Store rolled rather than folded, keep away from direct sunlight and from contact with pens or make-up, and press from the reverse only, avoiding the rainbow-feather embroidery.

FAQs

Before you order

Can I wear this ivory dove stole at Pentecost?

Not by the usual rule: Pentecost is kept in red in every tradition that marks it, whatever the dove imagery on a piece might suggest. This stole belongs to the white and gold class instead, so it is better kept for weddings, baptisms, confirmations and ordinations, where a dove of the Holy Spirit is equally at home.

What does the back of this stole look like?

The back is plain ivory satin with narrow gold piping. The tail ends of the rainbow feather embroidery carry over slightly onto the shoulder area, and the small gold crosses near the hem are visible from behind, but there is no separate back design beyond what shows through from the front motifs.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
