Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A white stole embroidered with a dove and olive sprig at the neck and a wavy rainbow running to a pool of water at the hem.

Made for baptism and christening services, worn by the priest, pastor or deacon presiding at the font.

Symbolism

The dove with an olive sprig recalls the bird sent from Noah's ark and, by extension, the Holy Spirit at Christ's baptism. The rainbow is the biblical sign of God's covenant not to abandon creation, fitting for the covenant a person enters at baptism.

Details

About this stole

The Baptism Covenant Stole is a white stole for the sacrament it is named for, carrying a dove and olive sprig at the neckline and a rainbow that runs the length of each panel to a small pool of water at the hem. It is available in any length between 84 in and 160 in.

01

Design and symbolism

A single white dove, carrying a sprig of olive in its beak, sits near the neck of the right-hand panel. Below it, a rainbow in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet arcs downward as a wavy ribbon rather than a static band, with small blue droplets stitched alongside it, and the design closes at the hem in a wave-like pool of blue. The dove and olive branch recall the bird Noah sent from the ark, and by extension the Holy Spirit descending at Christ's own baptism in the Jordan. The rainbow is the sign God set after the flood as a promise not to abandon creation, which is why baptism liturgies so often reach for it: the water that once judged the world now, in baptism, brings a person into the covenant instead.

02

Liturgical use

White is the colour of baptism in every tradition that assigns colours to the rite at all, so there is no caveat needed here as there is with some Advent or Marian pieces. This stole is built for the sacrament itself: infant baptism, adult baptism, christening, and, where a congregation extends the same white to it, confirmation.

03

Who it is for

Priests, pastors and deacons who baptise are the obvious wearers, and the design says so plainly rather than leaving the occasion to guesswork. The back of the stole is left plain, with only the shaped neck yoke for shape and no embroidery, so the visual weight sits entirely on the front, where the congregation and the family at the font will see it.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders in the usual presbyteral cut. Any length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and beyond that $10 is added for every further 5 in, to a maximum of 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, then adjust it if you want something different; the figure you settle on, along with your height and any notes, carries through to your cart and your finished order.

FAQs

Before you order

Can this dove and rainbow stole be worn beyond baptism?

It is designed around baptism specifically, and the dove-and-covenant imagery reads most clearly at the font. Some congregations that treat confirmation as an extension of baptismal promises use it there too.

Outside those two rites, the specific covenant symbolism is harder to justify, so we would not recommend it for, say, a funeral or an ordinary Sunday with no baptism on the calendar.

Is there any embroidery on the back of this stole?

No. The back panel is plain white with only the shaped neck yoke for structure; the dove, rainbow and water motifs are worked on the front only.

This keeps the design readable from the congregation's side of the font without adding weight or stiffness to the fabric around the neck.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
