Chalice veil sizing

A chalice veil is a square, so one figure matters: the side (A). Between two sizes, take the larger.

How a chalice veil is measured: A is one side of the square, edge to edge

How to measure

Measure your chalice from the foot to the rim. The taller the chalice, the larger the square it needs to drape well.

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A purple satin chalice veil embroidered in gold with a cross ringed by the crown of thorns, rays behind it and bullion fringe on all four sides. It is offered in three square sizes.

01

The design

The centre carries a gold cross with the crown of thorns encircling the point where the arms meet, and straight rays worked out behind it. A small crossed emblem sits in each corner, and a scrolling gold border runs round all four sides above the fringe. The veil is laid over the chalice with the cross to the front.

02

Cloth and finish

Purple satin in a true liturgical violet rather than a blue-leaning shade, which is what keeps it sitting correctly beside a violet chasuble and an Advent or Lent frontal. The gold is raised against the ground so the crown of thorns still reads from a distance, and the square hangs straight rather than curling at the corners.

03

Size

Three squares: 18 in, 20 in and 24 in on each side. A standard parish chalice is usually served well by the 20 in; the 18 in suits smaller and travel chalices, and the 24 in a taller chalice or a deeper drape. The size guide on this page carries the full table.

04

When it is worn

Violet is the colour of Advent and of Lent in the Western calendar, and it is also used for funerals and Masses for the dead in traditions that have moved away from black. The crown of thorns is a Passion sign, so this veil sits most naturally in Lent and through Holy Week up to the Triduum.

05

What you receive

The chalice veil only. The chalice and paten in the photographs are there to show the veil in use and are not included.

Care

Dry clean only. Satin, gold embroidery and bullion fringe all suffer in a domestic wash, and a deep violet loses its depth quickly when laundered at home.

Store the veil flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease sets across the cross. Press only on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never over the metal thread.

FAQs

Before you order

Which size chalice veil should I choose?

The three sizes are the finished square: 18 in, 20 in and 24 in on each side. A standard parish chalice is usually served well by the 20 in veil, which is why it sits in the middle of the range. The 18 in suits smaller and travel chalices; the 24 in suits taller chalices, or a priest who likes the veil to fall further towards the foot.

Open the size guide on this page for the full table. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: a veil with a little extra drape hangs better than one cut short.

What is included, and is the chalice shown part of the order?

This listing is for the chalice veil only. The chalice, paten, pall and burse shown in the photographs are there to show the veil in use and are not included.

If you want a burse made to match a veil, write to us before ordering and we will quote for the pair so the cloth and the embroidery are taken from the same run.

When is each colour used?

In the Western calendar the veil follows the colour of the day, matching the chasuble and stole. Green is worn through Ordinary Time, white for Christmas, Easter and most feasts of the Lord and Our Lady, violet for Advent and Lent, and red for Pentecost, Palm Sunday, Good Friday and the martyrs.

Blue is not a colour of the Roman calendar, but a Marian blue veil is widely used for Our Lady's feasts by indult and long custom in some places, and in Sarum use for Advent. Practice varies between traditions and dioceses, so follow your own ordinary where it differs.

How should the veil be cared for?

Dry clean only. Satin ground, gold embroidery and bullion fringe all suffer in a domestic wash, and the fringe in particular mats and will not recover.

Between uses, store the veil flat or loosely rolled with the embroidery outward rather than folded, so no crease sets across the centre motif. Comb the fringe straight with your fingers after handling. Press only on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never over the metal thread.

How long will my veil take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch.

If you need the veil for a particular ordination, first Mass or feast, put the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
