Details

About this cassock

A royal blue cassock robe with a cream shoulder yoke and gold doves embroidered on the body, cut to pair with a cream stole worked in doves and wheat.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock closing down the centre front, with a shaped cream yoke across the shoulders and collar that comes to a shallow point at the centre back. A gold dove is embroidered on each side of the chest, and a further dove marks the flapped hip pocket, so the emblem carries on the robe whether or not the stole is worn. The skirt is cut full enough to move in, with a centre vent through the back. Sleeves are long and straight. No belt, no hood.

02

The stole

The matching stole is cream, and carries a pair of gold doves above a spray of wheat low on each tail. The dove is the sign of the Holy Spirit descending at baptism; the wheat is the sign of the eucharistic bread and of harvest. Together they make a stole that serves a baptism, a first communion and a harvest thanksgiving without changing.

03

Cloth and finish

Both pieces are made in cotton with a matte face. The blue is a saturated royal rather than a navy, which is what keeps it reading as a deliberate liturgical colour, and the cream yoke and stole lift it without the hard edge a pure white would give.

04

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the blue cassock with its cream yoke, embroidered doves and dove pocket. Robe + Stole adds the dove and wheat stole shown in the photographs and adds $80 at every size code. The photographs show the pair.

05

Who wears it

Blue is the Sarum colour for Advent in Anglican and Episcopal use and is widely worn for Marian feasts; outside the strict calendar, royal blue is a common choice for baptism and dedication services in Protestant congregations. The dove and wheat make this a working robe for the sacraments rather than a seasonal one. It suits priests, pastors and ministers.

06

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. A cream yoke against a saturated royal blue will pick up dye in a domestic wash, and the gold doves will not survive one.

Baptismal water marks should be left to dry and taken to a cleaner rather than rubbed. Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, and store the stole flat or loosely rolled.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
