Details

About this habit

This habit keeps a single olive-green tone across the tunic, hood and sleeves, and sets a camel scapular over the top, front and back, edged with a thin line of darker piping. A rope cincture gathers the waist, and it pulls on over the head.

01

The cut

The hood and sleeves match the olive body rather than the scapular, which is the reverse of how colour is usually split in this range. The camel scapular runs the full length of the torso, front and back, with a fine dark piping stitched along its border. Sleeves are dropped at the shoulder and cut wide, in the same olive as the body. A rope cincture gathers the waist, tied at the front with a knotted tail. The hem flares out, slightly longer at the back than the front, with no pockets anywhere on the garment.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a wool habit, brushed and matte with a heather texture, in a two-tone treatment: olive for the body, hood and sleeves, and camel for the scapular, finished with a dark edge line. Beyond that piping, the cloth carries no pattern or embroidery.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A single body colour with a contrast scapular, rope cincture and pointed hood reads as a clean Franciscan-style silhouette, so we call it Franciscan in character; the olive-and-camel pairing, and the piped scapular edge, are our own choices rather than any order's. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people who want a two-tone habit without contrast sleeves.

04

Size and fit

Sizing runs to fourteen graded codes, a chest range paired with a robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is the fifteenth option, priced the same as the L sizes. There is no front fastening anywhere; the whole habit goes on over the head.

Compare the piped scapular edge in religious habits, read how wool wears on the fabric guide, check your chest measurement on the measuring guide, or commission a custom vestment in a colourway of your choosing.

Care

This is a wool habit, so hand wash in cool water or use a gentle wool cycle, and dry flat away from direct heat.

Keep the piped scapular edge away from sharp folds when storing, so the trim line stays flat.

Iron on a low, wool-safe setting, pressing the scapular from the reverse side rather than directly over the piping.

FAQs

Before you order

Why do the sleeves match the body instead of contrasting?

On this habit the hood and sleeves are cut in the same olive as the body, so the only contrast colour is the camel scapular. Other habits in our range put the contrast on the sleeves instead; this one keeps it to the scapular alone.

What is the thin line along the scapular's edge?

It is a narrow dark piping stitched along the scapular's border, giving the panel a defined edge against the camel cloth. It runs the length of the scapular front and back and is not repeated anywhere else on the habit.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
