Details

About this cassock

A white cassock robe with narrow pleating down the front, a stand collar and a matching sash belt with a fringed tassel.

01

The cut

The robe closes down the centre front behind a panel of narrow vertical pleats that run from the collar to the hem, which is what gives this robe its texture and keeps a white garment from reading as flat under strong light. A stand collar finishes the neck. Sleeves are long and straight. A sash in the same white cloth wraps the natural waist, and a fringed tassel hangs from it against the skirt. The skirt falls full to the ankle and there is a centre vent through the back.

02

Cloth and finish

Made in cotton with a matte face. White is the hardest colour to get right in a robe, because a flat white reads as clinical and a bright white flares under stage lighting. The pleating solves both: it breaks the surface into fine vertical lines that catch light softly and hold their shape as you move. The colour is unbroken, sash included.

03

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the cassock and its sash belt. Robe + Stole adds a matching stole made in the same cloth and finished by the same hand, and adds $80 at every size code. Both are cut to the size you choose.

04

Who wears it

White is the colour of Christmas, Easter, Trinity Sunday, weddings, baptisms and funerals of the resurrection across the Western calendar, and it is the colour worn on more feast days than any other. It is also standard for officiants at weddings in many Protestant traditions, where the calendar is not followed. A white pleated cassock suits priests, pastors, ministers and wedding officiants.

05

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean this robe. A pleated white panel is difficult to reset once the pleats have been flattened in a domestic wash, and white picks up colour from anything washed with it.

Press only on the reverse and never across the pleats. Hang the robe full length in a breathable cover rather than plastic, which yellows white cotton over time, and store the sash loosely rolled.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
