Details

About this habit

A single-layer ivory habit in a light, slubby cotton weave, with a plain pointed hood and a white rope cincture tied at the waist, the lightest and simplest habit in our range. It is available in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

This is a one-piece construction: a plain tunic with an attached pointed hood and no scapular or second panel of any kind. Wide, dropped bell sleeves match the ivory body. The rope cincture is white, tied at the waist with knotted ends that hang to roughly knee height. It pulls on over the head, like every habit we make, without any front closure to fasten.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth here is noticeably lighter than the wools elsewhere in our range: a slubby, textured cotton weave with a slightly crinkled surface, closer to a summer-weight habit than a winter one. It takes colour cleanly in this pale ivory and drapes softly rather than holding a stiff shape, so it moves more freely than the heavier wool habits in our range.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A plain, single-colour, undecorated hooded robe with a rope cincture is the most basic shape a habit takes, and this one does not copy the cut of any named order; the ivory colouring is our choice, not a claim about a community's dress. It is worn by monks, friars, oblates, novices, chaplains and lay people who keep a rule of life, and by anyone who wants a simple habit for private prayer or for wear in warmer weather.

04

Size and fit

Every habit, including this one, is available in fourteen graded sizes plus Made to Measure; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. Chest ranges run S 34-37in to 2XL 50-53in, and each size code pairs that with a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in taken from the nape of the neck to the hem. Send us your own measurements instead if none of the fourteen fit. There is no front fastening to do up.

Care

This cotton takes more frequent washing than our wools, but the pale ivory will still mark more easily than a dark colour, so treat spills and stains quickly.

Iron on a low setting from the reverse side if you need to press it, and avoid soaking it in strong detergent.

FAQs

Before you order

Why does this habit have no scapular?

This is a single-layer construction: a plain tunic with an attached hood and no second panel. It is the simplest cut we offer, without the scapular or collar seen on other habits in our range.

Does this habit have pockets?

We cannot confirm this from the photographs we hold of this style; the inside of the garment is not shown clearly enough to say either way. Get in touch before you order if pockets matter to you.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
