Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory and gold priest's stole, densely embroidered top to bottom with a crown, a cross, an IHS monogram, crossed torches with an orb, a Chi-Rho, fleur-de-lis and an Alpha and Omega over an open book.

For ordination, solemnities and other high feast days in the white and gold class.

Symbolism

IHS is the traditional monogram of the Holy Name of Jesus; the Chi-Rho combines the first two Greek letters of "Christ". The crossed torches and orb recall the light of Christ carried into the world, and the Alpha and Omega over an open book name Christ as beginning and end (Revelation 22:13).

Details

About this stole

This priest's stole is worked in gold on an ivory ground with eight emblems stacked down each panel, from a crown near the collar to an Alpha and Omega over an open book near the hem. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

Starting at the collar, each panel carries, in order: a crown with a red velvet-look band, a plain gold cross, the IHS monogram of the Holy Name, crossed flaming torches rising from an orb topped with a small cross, a passage of gold scrollwork, a Chi-Rho formed from the first two Greek letters of "Christ", a red fleur-de-lis, and finally an Alpha and Omega set over an open book near the hem. The gold thread stands proud of the ivory ground with a clear raised texture, consistent with worked satin stitch. A gold scrollwork border runs along both edges of each panel, gold cord edges the whole stole, and gold bullion fringe finishes both ends; the neck flap is plain ivory with a gold chevron trim and carries none of the panel emblems.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is the class for the church's highest days: Easter, Christmas, and the solemnities and feasts that call for festal dress. This stole is built for those occasions and for ordination; it is not for Lent, for a funeral, or for Ordinary Time, when its density of gold work would be out of place.

03

Who it is for

The pattern and its stacked emblems sit most naturally in a Catholic ordination, though IHS, the Chi-Rho and the Alpha and Omega are held in common across Anglican, Lutheran and other liturgical churches, so a priest or bishop from any of those traditions can wear it on a high feast.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs no more than standard; past 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, to a maximum of 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, which you can change; whatever you confirm travels with your order through checkout.

Care

This is the most densely worked stole in the collection, with gold thread and red accents on a pale ivory ground. Dry clean only.

  • Store rolled, not folded, to protect the raised gold work from creasing
  • Keep out of direct sunlight; the ivory ground marks and the red accents can fade faster than the gold
  • Press from the reverse on a low setting, and never press directly over the raised embroidery
  • Handle the bullion fringe by the fabric rather than the fringe strands, to stop it catching

FAQs

Before you order

What does the crown on this stole represent?

In this setting, near the top of an ordination stole alongside a cross and the IHS monogram, a crown reads as the crown of Christ's kingship, or the crown of life promised to those who persevere in faith (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10).

The crown is worked with a red velvet-look band as part of the embroidered motif; it is not a separate fabric piece and does not affect the stole's ivory ground.

Is this stole suited only to Catholic use?

The overall pattern, with several emblems stacked in sequence, follows a style most associated with Catholic ordination stoles. That said, the individual symbols are not Catholic property alone: IHS, the Chi-Rho and the Alpha and Omega appear in Anglican, Lutheran and other liturgical churches as well, so clergy from those traditions can wear it without difficulty.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
