Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory damask stole woven with a self-coloured floral pattern, embroidered with a gold Star of Bethlehem, scattered accent stars, lilies and a small manger scene near the hem.

A Christmas stole for the Nativity and the Christmas Eve or Day Mass.

Symbolism

The star marks the sign the Magi followed to Bethlehem.

The lilies are a long-standing Christian image of purity, and the small manger at the hem keeps the newborn Christ, not only the star above him, in view.

Details

About this stole

The Ivory Damask Nativity Stole is woven, not only embroidered: the ivory ground itself carries a tone-on-tone floral damask, and over it sits a large gold Star of Bethlehem, a scatter of smaller stars, a run of shaded lilies, and a small manger scene near the hem.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel opens near the collar with a large eight-point gold star, echoed below by several smaller stars worked in gold and, on each panel, one worked in maroon. Below the stars a lily grows in shaded tan, brown and olive thread rather than flat gold, giving the flower real depth. The design closes near the hem with a small embroidered manger holding a swaddled figure. Read top to bottom, the sequence follows the Christmas story itself: the star that led the Magi, the lily that stands for purity, and the manger that holds the child they found. The damask ground, a self-coloured floral weave rather than plain satin, gives the ivory a quiet sheen under the embroidery. The maroon accent star appears once on each panel, a small departure from the otherwise gold-and-tan palette that is easy to miss until you look closely.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is worn through the Christmas season, and this stole's Nativity theme belongs specifically to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, not to the wider white-and-gold class used through the rest of the year. It is not appropriate for Lent, for a funeral Mass, or for the violet weeks of Advent that come before it.

03

Who it is for

Cut for a priest, pastor or minister taking the principal Christmas services, in the presbyteral style worn straight down both shoulders.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length, and you can enter your own instead. The length, height and any notes you give us travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. The damask weave and the shaded lily and star embroidery should not be machine washed.

Store rolled, not folded; a fold line will show more readily on this jacquard weave than on plain satin. Keep out of direct sunlight, as the pale ivory ground marks and yellows more easily than a darker cloth, and press from the reverse on a low setting only.

FAQs

Before you order

When is this stole worn?

It is designed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Mass, when its Nativity, star and manger imagery is most fitting. It is not intended for the violet weeks of Advent that come before Christmas, which call for a different colour and a more penitential design.

Does this stole have fringe at the hem?

No. The hem is finished straight and self-edged, without cord trim or fringe. The damask weave itself, visible on the plain reverse, provides the only texture beyond the embroidery.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
