Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Symbolism

Details

About this stole

The body of this stole is an ivory-and-gold brocade with a raised woven pattern; burgundy velvet is used only as a narrow border along both edges. It is one of the most richly worked stoles in our range, and can be tailored to your length.

01

Design and symbolism

Near the top of each panel sits a circular medallion: a gold cross set inside a sunburst of rainbow-coloured rays, worked to resemble a stained-glass window. Below the medallion, dense gold and multicolour floral scrollwork fills the rest of the panel down to gold fringe at the hem - foliate and floral rather than figural, and unusually dense. The ground cloth itself carries a raised gold-and-ivory brocade pattern, and burgundy velvet borders run down both long edges and around the collar, giving the piece a second colour and a second texture rather than a plain field. A cross surrounded by radiating rays is a long-used way of showing Christ's glory - the light that breaks from the risen or transfigured Christ - and the floral scrollwork beneath it is decorative rather than symbolic in any fixed sense.

02

Liturgical use

Gold is not one of the seven Roman-rite colours in the strict sense, but it is widely used across Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran practice as a substitute for white on the church's highest feasts, and sometimes for red on especially solemn days. This stole's scale and density suit exactly that use: Christmas, Easter, high patronal feasts, and ordinations, rather than an ordinary Sunday.

03

Who it is for

Cut as a presbyteral stole for a priest, pastor or bishop, it is built for occasions that call for the richest piece in the wardrobe, and it makes a substantial ordination or jubilee gift for clergy who want a stole with genuine visual weight.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders, with any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in priced the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length once you enter your height, though your own figure will always override it; the length, height and any notes travel through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell your cleaner about the velvet borders, which crush under pressure and should never be pressed directly. Store the stole rolled, not folded, keep it away from direct sunlight, which will dull both the brocade sheen and the velvet nap, and press the brocade field from the reverse only, well away from the velvet edging.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole velvet or brocade?

The main fabric is an ivory-and-gold brocade with a raised woven pattern. Burgundy velvet is used only as a narrow border along both edges and around the collar. If you want a stole made entirely of velvet, see our velvet stoles in the clergy stole range.

What does the sunburst cross medallion represent?

A cross set within radiating rays is a traditional way of depicting Christ's glory, often associated with the light of the resurrection or the Transfiguration. Here it is worked in a stained-glass style, with the rays picked out in separate colours rather than in a single gold tone.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
