Details
About this habit
This habit is cut in three distinct colours rather than one or two: a charcoal-grey body, a black hood and matching scapular running front and back, and sleeves in a contrasting camel. It pulls on over the head and gathers at the waist with a rope cincture.
The cut
The scapular is black and runs the full length of the torso, front and back, and the pointed hood is cut from the same black cloth so the two read as one piece against the grey body beneath. Camel sleeves break from both, dropped at the shoulder and cut wide through the arm. A rope cincture, knotted at the front with a hanging tail, gathers the waist; there is no other fastening. The hem falls slightly longer at the back than the front, and there are no pockets.
Cloth and finish
This is a wool habit, brushed and matte with a heather texture across all three panels. The grey, black and camel are each a solid, flat colour, with no pattern or embroidery anywhere on the garment. The wool carries enough weight to hold the scapular's shape without the sleeves feeling stiff.
This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.
Who wears it
The pointed hood, scapular and rope cincture put this close to a Franciscan cut, so we call it Franciscan in character, but the three-colour treatment is a styling choice of ours rather than the dress of any order - habits in that tradition usually keep to one colour throughout. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people who want a habit for prayer or a personal rule of life.
Size and fit
We grade to fourteen sizes, each a chest range paired with a finished robe length: S is 34-37 in chest, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in and 2XL 50-53 in, with lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, the fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes. It has no front fastening; the whole habit is pulled on over the head.
See the full colour split against our religious habits, check the wool's weight on the fabric guide, confirm your chest size on the measuring guide, or start a custom vestment order to your own numbers.
