Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

The Requiem Stole gathers several of the oldest funeral symbols onto one black panel: wheat, a radiant cross, lilies, and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega split across the two sides, all worked in silver and white thread down to a beaded fringe.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel opens near the neck with a small wheat sprig, then a cross with fine radiating lines, then a cluster of lilies interwoven with more wheat. Below that, the left panel carries the letter Alpha and the right carries Omega, and each closes with a small cross set just above the beaded fringe. Wheat and lilies both speak to resurrection in church tradition, wheat because a buried grain rises as new growth, lilies because of their long association with Easter and eternal life. Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, are Christ's own words for himself in Revelation, the beginning and the end, and splitting the two letters across the pair of panels is a quiet way of keeping the wearer's body between them.

02

Liturgical use

Black remains the traditional colour for funerals and requiem Masses in the Roman and Anglo-Catholic traditions, and this stole was designed with that use specifically in mind, including services for All Souls' Day. Where a parish now uses white for funerals, drawing on the language of resurrection rather than mourning, this piece is not the right choice; its whole design leans on the older black-vestment vocabulary.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor leading funerals, requiem Masses or an All Souls' commemoration will find the density of symbolism here suits a service built around scripture and reflection rather than a brief committal. The back yoke keeps a single radiant cross in silver, plain enough not to compete with the fuller design on the front.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders in the presbyteral cut. Lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard, and every further 5 in beyond that adds $10, to a maximum of 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own figure directly; the length, height and any notes you give travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

What do the Alpha and Omega letters mean on this stole?

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and Christ uses them of himself in the book of Revelation to say he is the beginning and the end. Splitting the two letters across the left and right panels is a traditional way of presenting them, so that the wearer stands between them.

They sit just below a cluster of lilies and wheat on this stole, both long-standing resurrection symbols, which keeps the letters in company with the rest of the design rather than isolated as decoration.

Is this stole appropriate for an All Souls' Day service?

Yes. It was designed around the same black-vestment tradition that All Souls' Day observes in churches that keep it, alongside its use for ordinary funerals and requiem Masses.

If your parish has moved to white for All Souls' or for funerals generally, this stole's black ground and mourning symbolism will not match that choice, and one of the white pieces in the catalogue would suit better.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
