Details

About this habit

A charcoal-grey robe carries a solid black scapular front and back, topped by a fuller, rounded hood rather than a sharply pointed one - a heavier wool habit gathered at the waist with a knotted rope cincture.

01

The cut

The scapular is a long, solid black rectangular panel, front and back, extending to roughly mid-thigh over a charcoal-grey base tunic. The hood is rounder and fuller than the sharply pointed hoods elsewhere in our range, gathered rather than seamed to a single point, though from the back it still forms a triangular shape where it meets the shoulders. Sleeves are charcoal, set with visible princess seaming at the shoulder. A cream-tan rope cincture is knotted with visible knots along its hanging tail, and there is no other visible closure; the wrapped cincture is what holds the habit at the waist. The hem flares slightly, with a stepped under-layer that runs a little longer at the back than the front.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a wool habit, brushed and matte, with a heathered texture across the charcoal panels and a flat solid black on the scapular. It carries more weight than a cotton cloth, and the flared hem and princess-seamed sleeves give it more shape through the body than a straight-cut tunic.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A black scapular over a grey-toned habit loosely follows the Benedictine scapular-over-tunic shape, though true Benedictine dress is usually monochrome black rather than two-tone, so we describe this as Benedictine in character rather than a literal match to any one community's dress - the charcoal-and-black pairing is our own choice. It suits those who want the classic scapular silhouette with a fuller hood and more shape through the sleeve and hem.

04

Size and fit

Sizing runs to fourteen graded codes, each a chest range paired with a robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, the fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes. The habit pulls on over the head; there is no front fastening.

Compare the rounded hood with the pointed hoods across religious habits, read about wool weights on the fabric guide, check sizing on the measuring guide, or start a custom vestment built to your own figure.

Care

Hand wash in cool water or use a wool cycle, and dry flat to keep the flared hem and princess-seamed sleeves in shape.

The black scapular can mark or transfer colour while damp, so wash this habit alone at first.

Air between wears rather than washing frequently, and use a cool iron with a cloth barrier over the wool.

FAQs

Before you order

Is the hood on this habit different from your other habits?

Yes. Most of our habits use a sharply pointed hood; this one is fuller and more gathered, rounder at the crown, though it still comes to a triangular point where it meets the shoulders when seen from behind.

What is the visible seaming on the sleeves?

That is princess seaming, a shaping seam that runs down the sleeve and shoulder to give the habit more structure than a simple dropped-shoulder cut. It is a construction detail rather than decoration.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
