How to measure

Measure over the alb you will wear.

Overview

What this piece is

Symbolism

The interlaced A and M beneath a crown is the Auspice Maria monogram, meaning under the protection of Mary; the same letters are often read simply as Ave Maria.

The ring of stars, the white lilies and the doves are motifs long attached to Our Lady in Christian art, and they suit Advent, the season of the Annunciation and of her waiting.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A violet satin gothic chasuble for Advent and Lent, embroidered in gold with the crowned Auspice Maria monogram, a ring of stars, white lilies and doves. It is a penitential vestment with a Marian face, made for the season in which the Church waits with Our Lady.

01

The embroidery

The front orphrey is set between two bands of gold galloon. At its head a royal crown rests above the interlaced A and M of the Auspice Maria monogram, ringed with small gold stars. Below, white lilies open between doves with outspread wings, and a climbing scroll of gold foliage carries further lilies down to a footed urn at the hem. Two smaller crowned monograms and two gold crosses are set on the shoulders.

The back is quieter by design: a single royal crown at the top of a tall column of gold vine, rose and fleur-de-lys scrollwork, held between narrow gold stripes, with a small gold cross at the back of the collar.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is the colour of the two penitential seasons. This chasuble is made for Advent and Lent, and serves equally for penitential services, communal celebrations of reconciliation, and, where local custom uses violet rather than black, for funerals and Masses for the dead.

Its Marian imagery suits Advent particularly, the season of the Annunciation, the Rorate Mass and the O Antiphons. It is not the vestment for the white Marian solemnities such as the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption, which call for white or gold, and it is not worn at Pentecost, in Holy Week or in Ordinary Time.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The ground is a violet satin with a clear, cool lustre, edged and divided with woven gold galloon, and the embroidery is stitched into the cloth rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want — and the chasuble is cut to them. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries metallic-thread embroidery.

  • Violet is the liturgical colour most vulnerable to light, and a seasonal vestment spends most of the year in storage. Keep it in a closed garment bag or vestment press out of daylight, not on an open rail near a window.
  • Hang it on a broad padded hanger between uses rather than folding it.
  • Press only from the reverse, with a cloth between the iron and the vestment. Never press the embroidery directly.

FAQs

Before you order

When is a violet chasuble worn?

Violet is the colour of the two penitential seasons, Advent and Lent, and of penitential services and communal celebrations of reconciliation. In many places it is also used for funerals and Masses for the dead in place of black.

On the Third Sunday of Advent and the Fourth Sunday of Lent, rose may be worn instead where a rose vestment is available.

What does the AM monogram on the orphrey mean?

It is the Auspice Maria monogram, an A and an M interlaced beneath a crown: a Marian device meaning, roughly, under the protection of Mary. The same letters are often read simply as Ave Maria.

Around it the orphrey carries a ring of stars, white lilies for purity, and doves with outspread wings, motifs long associated with Our Lady in Christian art.

Marian feasts are usually white. Why is this Marian vestment violet?

Because the season it is made for is itself Marian. Advent turns on the Annunciation and on Mary's waiting, and the Rorate Mass and the O Antiphons keep her at the centre of those weeks, while the colour of the season stays violet.

So this chasuble is for Advent and Lent, not for the white Marian solemnities such as the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption. For those, choose an ivory or white chasuble.

Is the violet stole in the photographs included?

What you order here is the chasuble. The stole is photographed with it to show how the two look worn together.

If you would like a stole embroidered to match, write to support@theclergycouture.com before or just after ordering and we will confirm the price and whether it can be dispatched together with the chasuble.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A chasuble is wide and unfastened, so a standard size chosen on height suits most wearers. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or want the garment to sit differently over the arms. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Will violet satin fade if it is only used twice a year?

Violet is the dye most vulnerable to light of any liturgical colour, and a seasonal vestment spends most of the year in storage, which is where the damage usually happens. Keep it in a closed garment bag or a vestment press, out of any daylight, rather than on an open rail near a window.

Dry clean only, on a broad padded hanger between uses, and press from the reverse with a cloth rather than pressing the embroidery.
