About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A deep violet gothic chasuble for Lent and Advent, embroidered in gold with a radiant cross, crossed wheat ears and the IHS monogram set in a beaded roundel. The cloth has a soft matte finish that absorbs light rather than catching it, which is what a penitential vestment should do.

01

The embroidery

The orphrey is not a laid-on band but a panel marked out by fine gold piping. A crest of fleur-de-lys and scrolling stands at the head of it, and beneath that a budded gold cross with fine rays radiating from the crossing. Below the cross, crossed wheat ears rise from curving leaves; below them the letters IHS sit inside a roundel outlined in small beads; and a broad foliate scroll closes the panel with a large fleur-de-lys at the hem.

Read downwards the panel moves from the Passion to the Holy Name to the bread of the Eucharist. The back is left plain, with a small gold fleur-de-lys at the neck and gold piping following the hem.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is the colour of the penitential seasons. This chasuble is made for Lent and Advent, for Ash Wednesday, and for penitential services and communal celebrations of reconciliation. Where local custom uses violet rather than black, it also serves for funerals and Masses for the dead.

On Gaudete Sunday and Laetare Sunday rose may be worn instead, where a rose vestment is kept. Violet is not worn at Pentecost or on Good Friday, which call for red, or in Ordinary Time, which calls for green.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The ground is a deep violet cloth with a soft, velvety matte surface; fine gold piping outlines the orphrey panel, the neckline and the entire hem, and the embroidery is stitched into the cloth rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

05

Ordering for a date

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 days, and delivery typically takes a further 10–15 days. Lent and Advent both bring a rush, so order well before Ash Wednesday or the First Sunday of Advent, or write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will tell you what is still possible.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries metallic-thread embroidery on a matte ground.

  • Violet fades faster in light than any other liturgical colour, and this vestment is in storage for most of the year. Keep it in a closed garment bag or vestment press, not on an open rail near a window.
  • Lift creases with steam held away from the cloth. Pressing a matte surface flat leaves shine marks that do not come out.
  • Hang it on a broad padded hanger between uses and never press the embroidery directly.

FAQs

Before you order

Which days call for a violet chasuble?

The Sundays and weekdays of Lent and of Advent, Ash Wednesday, penitential services and communal celebrations of reconciliation. In many places violet is also used for funerals and Masses for the dead in place of black.

Rose may be worn instead on Gaudete Sunday, the third of Advent, and Laetare Sunday, the fourth of Lent, where a rose vestment is kept.

What does IHS mean?

IHS is the oldest Christian monogram for the name of Jesus, formed from the first letters of the name written in Greek. It has been read since the Middle Ages as a Latin phrase as well, most often Iesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus Saviour of mankind.

Here it sits in a beaded roundel below crossed wheat ears, with the radiant cross above, so the panel reads downwards from the Passion to the name and to the bread of the Eucharist.

Why is the back left plain?

Restraint suits a penitential season. A single embroidered face keeps the vestment light and lets the deep colour of the cloth do the work when the priest turns to the altar; the only ornament on the back is a small gold fleur-de-lys at the neck and gold piping along the hem.

If you want the back embroidered as well, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, and we will send you a quotation.

How does this differ from your violet Marian chasuble?

This one is Christological and sober: a deep matte violet, a radiant cross, wheat and the IHS monogram, embroidered on the front only. It is the natural Lent vestment of the two.

The violet Marian chasuble is lighter in feeling, in a lustrous satin with the crowned Auspice Maria monogram, lilies, doves and stars, which suits Advent and its Marian character. Parishes that keep two violet sets usually split them exactly that way.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen on height suits most wearers. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges or want a particular hem length. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should a deep matte violet be stored between seasons?

In the dark. Violet is the liturgical colour most vulnerable to light, and a Lent and Advent vestment is in storage for roughly forty weeks a year, which is where fading happens. Use a closed garment bag or a vestment press rather than an open sacristy rail near a window.

Dry clean only, hang on a broad padded hanger, and lift creases with steam held away from the cloth rather than pressing a matte surface flat, which leaves shine marks.
