Details

About this cassock

A royal purple cassock robe with silver crosses embroidered on the chest panels, silver-fringed tassels and silver piping at the cuffs and hem.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock with a stand collar and a row of covered buttons down the centre front. A silver cross is embroidered on each front panel at chest height, and beneath each sits a silver-fringed band, so the ornament is carried on the robe itself rather than depending on a stole. Silver piping runs around each cuff and along the hem. Sleeves are long and straight. The back is plain with a centre vent through the skirt, and there is a flapped hip pocket.

02

Cloth and finish

Made in cotton with a matte face. The purple is a deep royal violet rather than a blue-leaning shade, which is what keeps it correct alongside Lent and Advent paraments and gives it the weight expected of episcopal purple. Silver is the cooler counterpart to gold and sits more quietly against violet, which is why it suits a penitential season better.

03

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the cassock as photographed, with its embroidered crosses and fringed bands. Robe + Stole adds a separate matching stole cut from the same cloth and worked in the same silver, and adds $80 at every size code.

04

Who wears it

Purple is the colour of Advent and Lent across Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and Methodist practice, and is also used for funerals in traditions that have moved away from black. Royal purple carries rank in several churches, so confirm your own tradition's convention if you serve under a bishop who reserves the shade. The robe is cut without insignia and is worn by priests, pastors and ministers as well.

05

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. Silver thread tarnishes and fringe mats in a domestic wash, and a deep purple loses depth quickly when laundered at home.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, working around the buttons and never over the embroidery. Comb the fringe straight after cleaning and hang the robe full length out of direct sunlight.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
