Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Ivory satin stole embroidered with a radiant gold cross over a mountain and cloud landscape scattered with small stars. For Easter, Christmastide and other festive white Masses, including weddings and ordinations.

Symbolism

The radiant cross set inside a sunburst is a common way to picture Christ's glory breaking into the world. The mountain and cloud below it, with small stars scattered near the hem, extend that reading into a landscape of dawn breaking over high ground, closer to devotional art than to a fixed heraldic emblem.

Details

About this stole

This priest's stole is worked in ivory satin-look cloth. Each panel carries, top to bottom, a gold cross set inside a sunburst of radiating gold and silver-white rays, embroidered mountain peaks with light rays descending beneath it, and a small cloud scattered with stars near the fringe.

01

Design and symbolism

The three registers run the full length of each panel in sequence: the radiant cross at the top, the mountain landscape in the centre, and the cloud and stars low near the hem. It is a more pictorial treatment than the heraldic emblems - Chi Rho, Jerusalem cross, Luther Rose - that appear on many of our other stoles; here the cross is set into a landscape rather than standing alone. The radiant cross reads as Christ's glory breaking into the world, and the mountain and cloud beneath it extend that into a dawn-over-high-ground scene rather than pointing to one named biblical mountain.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is the class for the church's most festive days: Easter and the Easter season, Christmastide, and any Sunday kept as a general feast, along with occasional Masses such as weddings and ordinations where white is customary regardless of the season in the wider calendar. It is not worn through Lent or Advent, which call for violet, nor through most of Ordinary Time, which calls for green.

03

Who it is for

A priest or deacon who wants a festal stole with imagery beyond the standard heraldic set, suited equally to a Sunday of the Easter season or to an ordination or wedding where the officiant is dressed in white. The landscape motif also reads well as an ordination gift for a newly ordained minister who has spoken about creation or the natural world in his ministry.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders; any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in past 120 in, up to 160 in. The product page's height box will suggest a length once you enter your height, and you can override that suggestion - the exact figure travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

What do the mountain and clouds under the cross mean?

They are not one of the church's fixed heraldic emblems in the way a Chi Rho or a Jerusalem cross is. Read together with the radiant cross above them, they form a devotional landscape scene, closer to dawn breaking over high ground than to a specific biblical reference.

Because the design does not point to one named mountain or event, we keep the symbolism general here rather than assign it a meaning the embroidery itself does not make explicit.

Is this stole only suitable for weddings?

No. It belongs to the white and gold class, which covers Easter and the Easter season, Christmastide, and any general festal Sunday, in addition to occasional Masses such as weddings and ordinations.

A priest could wear it through the whole Easter season, not only at the single wedding or ordination Mass some buyers first have in mind.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
