Details

About this cassock

An olive green cassock robe with a plum shoulder yoke, cut to pair with a plum stole worked in the Holy Spirit dove.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock closing down the centre front, with a shaped plum yoke across the shoulders and collar that comes to a shallow point at the centre back. Cream piping sits above each cuff, and there is a flapped hip pocket marked with a small cream dove. The skirt is cut full enough to move in, with a centre vent through the back. Sleeves are long and straight. No belt, no hood.

02

The stole

The matching stole is plum, edged in cream, and carries a descending dove worked in cream over a spray of leaves low on each tail. The dove descending is the sign of the Holy Spirit at the baptism of Christ and at Pentecost, and it is one of the few emblems read the same way in almost every Christian tradition. A third motif sits at the neck.

03

Cloth and finish

Both pieces are made in cotton with a matte face. Olive is a muted, greyed green rather than a bright liturgical green, and the plum yoke gives it the depth it would otherwise lack at the shoulder. The pairing suits congregations that prefer muted colour to the saturated greens and purples of a traditional vestment set.

04

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the olive cassock with its plum yoke, cream cuff piping and dove pocket. Robe + Stole adds the Holy Spirit dove stole shown in the photographs and adds $80 at every size code. The photographs show the pair.

05

Who wears it

The dove makes this pairing a natural choice for baptisms, confirmations and Pentecost, while the olive ground keeps it usable through Ordinary Time. It is worn by pastors, ministers, priests and chaplains. If your church keeps liturgical colour strictly, treat olive as a muted green rather than a substitute for the prescribed green, and note that the plum stole is not a liturgical violet.

06

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. Cream embroidery against a plum ground is the combination most likely to pick up dye in a domestic wash, and baptismal water marks are better dealt with by a cleaner than by rubbing.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over the dove. Hang the robe full length and store the stole flat or loosely rolled so no crease sets across the embroidery.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
