Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

The Ivory Gloria Angels Stole carries two trumpeting angels on each panel, standing on clouds and worked in gold with cream and white shading, above a gold ribbon banner reading Gloria in excelsis Deo.

01

Design and symbolism

Where a single angel is common on Christmas vestments, this design uses two, stacked one above the other on each panel, each shown mid-trumpet-call and standing on a bank of cloud. The shading moves between gold and cream rather than staying flat, giving the figures some modelling. The two angels are worked at a matching scale and pose, so the pair reads as a mirrored set rather than two different figures, which keeps the eye on the banner text beneath them. That banner spells out the words Luke's Gospel gives the angels at the Nativity, Gloria in excelsis Deo, glory to God in the highest.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is worn at Christmas Eve, Midnight Mass and Christmas Day. It is not suited to the violet weeks of Advent that come before it, nor to Lent or a funeral Mass.

03

Who it is for

Cut for a priest, pastor or minister taking the Christmas services, in the presbyteral style worn straight down both shoulders. The Latin text suits a parish that keeps some Latin in its Christmas liturgy, though the phrase is widely sung in English translation as well, and the two-angel design gives the stole a busier, more festive character than a single-figure Christmas piece.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or override it with your own measurement. Your length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. The gold and cream shaded angel embroidery is not rated for a home wash or dryer.

Store rolled rather than folded to keep the angel figures free of crease lines, and away from direct sunlight, which will dull the cream shading against the gold thread over time. Press from the reverse on a low setting only.

FAQs

Before you order

Why does this stole show two angels instead of one?

Most Christmas stoles carry a single angel; this design stacks two on each panel, one above the other, both shown mid-trumpet-call and standing on a bank of cloud. Keeping the pair at matching scale and pose lets the eye settle on the Gloria in excelsis Deo banner beneath them rather than competing angel figures.

What does Gloria in excelsis Deo mean?

It is Latin for glory to God in the highest, the opening words of the song the angels sing to the shepherds at the Nativity in Luke's Gospel. It is also the opening line of the Gloria sung or said in the Mass and in many other Christian liturgies.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
