Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory satin gothic chasuble with a deep red velvet orphrey, embroidered in gold with the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the front and a crowned cross on the back. It belongs to the white class, so it is worn on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on any day that calls for white or gold.

01

The embroidery

The front orphrey is a band of red velvet edged in gold galloon and set against ivory satin. At its centre the Sacred Heart is worked in its traditional form: the heart wreathed in the crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, standing in a wide burst of gold rays. Above and below it run gold fleur-de-lys, roses and acanthus scroll.

On the back the velvet is cut in the shape of a cross rather than a straight band. A gold cross sits at the crossing beneath a royal crown, doves are worked into the scroll beneath it, and the column runs down to a large fleur-de-lys at the hem. The collar is faced in the same red velvet and carries a small gold cross.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white liturgical class. The chasuble is intended first for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and First Fridays, and is equally correct at Christmas and Easter, on feasts of Our Lord, and at weddings, jubilees and Masses of thanksgiving.

The red of the orphrey is ornament, not the colour of the vestment: it does not stand in for a red chasuble on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost or a martyr's feast. It is not worn in Advent or Lent, which call for violet, or in Ordinary Time, which calls for green.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The ground is ivory satin with a warm lustre; the orphrey is red velvet, laid on and edged with woven gold galloon, and the embroidery is stitched into it rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want — and the chasuble is cut to them. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large. Worth doing if the vestment is for a wedding or a jubilee that will be photographed.

Care

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment combines a velvet orphrey with a satin ground and carries dense gold embroidery, so it must not be pressed flat.

  • Velvet crushes where it is folded. Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger rather than folding it, and keep it in a garment bag between uses.
  • Ivory satin marks easily. Handle it with clean dry hands and keep it away from candle wax and incense residue.
  • Steam from the reverse rather than pressing the pile, and never press the embroidery directly.

FAQs

Before you order

Which days is this chasuble made for?

Ivory belongs to the white class, so the chasuble is correct wherever white or gold is worn: the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, First Fridays, Christmas and Easter, feasts of Our Lord, weddings, thanksgiving Masses and jubilees.

It is not worn in Advent or Lent, which call for violet, at Pentecost or in Holy Week, which call for red, or in Ordinary Time, which calls for green.

What does the Sacred Heart image on the orphrey mean?

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is shown in its traditional form: the heart wreathed in the crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, and set in a burst of rays. It stands for the love of Christ for the world, and the devotion attached to it is among the most widely kept in the Latin Church.

On the back the orphrey is cut in the shape of a cross, with a gold cross at the crossing under a royal crown, and doves worked into the scrollwork beneath it.

Is the red stole in the photographs included?

What you order here is the chasuble. The stole is photographed with it to show how the set looks worn together.

If you would like a stole embroidered to match, write to support@theclergycouture.com before or just after ordering and we will confirm the price and whether it can be dispatched together with the chasuble.

Is a red orphrey on an ivory chasuble liturgically correct?

Yes. The liturgical colour of a vestment is taken from its ground, not from its ornament. This is a white-class chasuble with a red orphrey, and orphreys in a contrasting colour are a long-standing feature of Roman and gothic vestment design.

It does not stand in for a red chasuble on days that call for red, such as Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost or a martyr's feast.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A chasuble is wide and unfastened, so a standard size chosen on height suits most wearers. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are ordering for a wedding or jubilee where the fit matters to the photographs. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How do I care for velvet and ivory satin together?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment combines a velvet orphrey with a satin ground and carries dense gold embroidery, so it is not pressed flat.

Velvet crushes where it is folded, and ivory satin marks easily, so hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger rather than folding it, keep it in a garment bag between uses, and steam from the reverse rather than pressing the pile.
